As a renowned Tea nationwide, Xinyang Maojian has received high praise and acclaim from experts in various domestic and international evaluations. Back in 1985, during the national quality award evaluation, the judges gave the following comments: “Fine, delicate, and peculiarly verdant appearance with visible downy tips; tender fragrance; rich and mellow taste; bright, fresh green infusion; uniform leaf residue,” earning it a silver medal.
In 1990, Xinyang Maojian participated once again in the national quality award competition. The judges commented: “Fine and delicate tea leaves covered with downy tips, color of concealed emerald luster, high and refreshing aroma, pure and brisk taste, clear and bright infusion, tender and uniformly clean leaf residue.” It won the national quality gold medal. Xinyang Maojian is a precious tea, and among over 100 kinds of green teas nationwide, only two—Xihu Longjing and Xinyang Maojian—have been awarded the national gold medal for excellence.
High-quality raw materials are the foundation for making premium Xinyang Maojian. The altitudes of the areas where Xinyang Maojian is produced are mostly above 300 to 800 meters. Here, clouds and mist abound, vegetation is lush, birds sing, and flowers emit fragrance, providing strong sunlight, which offers Xinyang Maojian natural resources. The Xinyang Maojian tea produced here is rich in internal substances, especially amino acids, catechins, caffeine, aromatic substances, and water-soluble extracts, all of which surpass those from southern tea regions.
According to the classification based on Tea processing methods, Xinyang Maojian belongs to the Green Tea category, which is also an unfermented tea. Among green teas, there are two different processing methods: pan-firing and steam-fixing. Xinyang Maojian is processed using the pan-firing method and has its unique craftsmanship. The Xinyang Maojian tea made through this process has a beautiful appearance and excellent internal quality, is durable when steeped, and leaves a lingering fragrance after drinking.
