Ripe Tea does not require the lengthy aging period that raw tea does; generally, it can achieve good flavor after being stored for 3 to 5 years and reach an even better quality level around 10 years. Typically, starting to drink ripe Pu'er after 3 to 5 years will offer a better tasting experience.
Ripe Pu'er: Optimal Aging Period
Ripe Pu'er tea reaches its best taste after being stored for 7 years, especially high-quality ripe Pu'er, which becomes more flavorful with age. Pu'er is a type of tea that can be preserved long-term without a definitive expiration date, provided it is stored properly.
When storing Pu'er tea, it is important to maintain a relatively dry environment with good air circulation and moderate temperatures, avoiding direct sunlight as it can accelerate aging. Also, ensure there are no extraneous odors and that the tea is well-sealed to preserve it over time.
When brewing ripe Pu'er tea, boiling water is typically used. For ripe Pu'er that has not been stored for a long time, avoid boiling the leaves, as this can destroy nutrients, diminish aroma and flavor, and result in a poorer tasting infusion.
Ripe Pu'er: Four Key Stages of Aging
Ripe Pu'er goes through four key stages: enjoyable at 2 to 3 years; better at 8 to 10 years; very good at 15 to 20 years; and excellent beyond 20 years. Aged ripe Pu'er is characterized by its “smooth, rich, and comfortable aged aroma,” one reason why consumers are drawn to these mature teas.
In addition to the five criteria—aroma, Sweetness, richness, thickness, and smoothness—used to evaluate aged ripe Pu'er, there should also be a standard of “smooth, rich, sweet, harmonious, and comfortable” for teas aged between 15 to 20 years. For ripe Pu'er aged over 20 years, these five criteria plus “aged aroma and character” become the high standards.
The term “transformational sensation” refers to the tea soup not having the astringency of dry-stored mid-aged teas but instead having a dispersing feel, often giving drinkers a subtle yet distinct sensation that lingers pleasantly in the mouth. The aroma and character should be lively, invigorating, and pleasurable, expanding the throat and leaving one wanting another Cup.
Aged ripe Pu'er, due to its extended storage period, offers a unique tasting experience that includes temporal elements beyond its intrinsic qualities and storage conditions. Its aged aroma and character, developed over time, cannot be replicated by any other type of tea.
