Pu-er Tea – Does It Expire If Stored for Too Long?

Tea News · May 06, 2025

Regarding the shelf life of Pu'er Tea, there is no definitive conclusion, and there are also a lack of relevant standards for its storage. Therefore, it's difficult to determine when it might expire. However, if you notice that the Pu'er tea has developed mold or dampness, which may alter some of its components, it is not recommended to steep it in water for drinking, as it could cause symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain. If the Pu'er tea has been stored under good conditions without developing mold or any off-flavors, it can still be steeped and consumed normally.

The Shelf Life of Pu'er Tea

Pu'er tea is renowned for its characteristic of becoming more fragrant with age. Some people say that, traditionally speaking, tea does not have an expiration date; however, tea can absorb odors and moisture, leading to “chemical changes” in its internal properties, altering its taste and causing it to spoil.

If Pu'er tea is stored properly, it will indeed become more fragrant with age. However, when purchasing Pu'er tea, one might notice that the outer packaging indicates a shelf life, referring to long-term storage according to national standards. This is because it is mandated by regulations that food products must display a shelf life, and Pu'er tea meets the requirements for long-term storage. However, this is contingent upon proper storage conditions, including protection from light, maintenance of room temperature, prevention of Odor contamination, control of humidity, and adequate ventilation.

Pu'er tea is made from unique large-Leaf varieties and is categorized into two types based on processing methods: raw tea and ripe tea. Its leaves are thick and robust, rich in flavor, and capable of aging. Therefore, it does not have a fixed shelf life, and it is generally believed that it can be stored for 15 to 20 years. According to the standard GBT22111-2008, under appropriate storage conditions, it can be kept for an extended period.

Does Pu'er Tea Expire Over Time?

Pu'er tea can typically be stored for 20 to 30 years without issue. However, the optimal time for enjoying Pu'er tea is around 15 to 20 years. For ripe teas, 8 to 15 years is considered a good period for consumption. Of course, the specific duration of storage is significantly influenced by the storage environment. Pu'er tea does have an expiration date. The concept of “aging enhances fragrance” only applies within the shelf life. If stored improperly, the optimal shelf life may be shortened.

Storing Pu'er tea requires careful consideration. High temperatures and humid environments can lead to mold growth. To enjoy the aged aroma of Pu'er tea, it should be stored in an environment with a temperature range of 20°C to 30°C, humidity below 75%, and good air circulation in a cool, dark place. It is also important to keep it away from foods with strong odors to prevent the tea from absorbing unwanted flavors.

If there are water stains on the paper wrapping of the Pu'er tea, or if the tea cake develops white frost, mold spots, or a musty smell, and the tea liquor appears cloudy after brewing, it may have gone bad and should not be consumed.
