How Long is the Shelf Life of Pu'er Tea?

The majority of Pu'er tea purchased in daily life falls into two categories: raw Pu'er and ripe Pu'er. The shelf life of these two types varies. Raw Pu'er has a longer shelf life, and it can be stored for 20 to 30 years without issue. Ripe Pu'er has a slightly shorter shelf life compared to raw Pu'er, but it can still be kept for at least 15 years. Although these periods may seem long, the most important factor lies in how we store the Pu'er tea. If not stored properly, all these durations become meaningless.

How to Store Pu'er Tea?

1. Store the tea in plastic bags within cardboard boxes, making sure the boxes do not touch walls.

2. Use Ceramic jars or Yixing clay pots for storage.

3. For long-term storage, use bamboo wrappers. For loose tea, seal it in plastic bags or store it in Yixing clay pots.

The ideal environment for storing Pu'er tea is dry, cool, Odor-free, and well-ventilated. Pu'er tea can be stored using multiple layers of paper bags or bamboo sheaths directly, without needing an outer layer of plastic to avoid hindering air circulation. Similarly, refrigeration is not necessary for storing Pu'er tea. However, if you have a small amount of tea at home or if the storage environment is unstable, using plastic bags or aluminum foil bags is an option. The materials chosen should be dense, thick, and odorless.

After placing the Pu'er tea in the bag, squeeze out the air inside and then place another bag over it in the opposite direction. If a transparent plastic bag is used, avoid direct sunlight exposure to reduce the chance of the tea coming into contact with air and prevent spoilage.

When is Pu'er Tea Best to Drink?

Pu'er tea is best consumed after being stored for more than five years. As time passes, the tea undergoes natural fermentation, resulting in a richer and more mellow flavor. It's recommended to choose high-quality Pu'er tea for storage, as this will improve its taste even further. Once the tea has been stored for over ten years, its aroma becomes even more intense. This is why Pu'er tea is known for its characteristic of becoming more fragrant with age.

Pu'er tea develops a unique aroma that fresh teas lack, which only comes about through long-term fermentation. The longer it is stored, the more intense the aroma becomes, and the gentler the nature of the tea becomes.
