Tea News · May 06, 2025

Pu'er Tea is known for becoming more fragrant with age; as time passes, its aroma and flavor become richer. However, many tea enthusiasts neglect proper storage methods, leading to their Pu'er tea absorbing unwanted odors or becoming damp. So, how should Pu'er tea be stored and preserved?

1. First, Pu'er tea requires a dedicated storage space for aging. If you want your tea to age well and have a considerable amount of it, having an independent storage area is ideal. This storage area must avoid direct sunlight and moisture. Maintain a constant temperature around 23 degrees Celsius and humidity between 50% and 70%.

2. Not only should the tea not be sealed, but the storage area also needs appropriate ventilation. Ensure the room is clean and that the tea is not stored alongside other objects with strong odors, as Pu'er tea has a strong absorption capacity, which can lead to it picking up unwanted flavors over time.

3. When storing Pu'er tea, periodically rotate its position, especially when storing loose tea. Regularly turning the tea ensures even aging during the transformation process. For compressed teas, switch the positions of new and old batches.

4. During the aging process, water content is a crucial factor in Pu'er tea. The amount of water directly impacts the quality of the final product. It should neither be too much nor too little, ideally kept at around 10%. This is essential for the proper transformation of correctly processed Pu'er tea (especially raw tea).

5. When the relative humidity is between 50% and 70%, the moisture content of Pu'er tea in compressed form remains relatively stable, preventing both gain and loss of moisture.

To preserve Pu'er tea, it should be stored in a clean, Odor-free, dark, and slightly ventilated environment. Before storage, prepare a five-layer cardboard box, ensuring it is clean and odor-free. Organize the Pu'er tea (with its paper wrapper) by batch and type, then place them in the box. Seal the box and store it in a study or tea room, away from walls and the floor, with adequate ventilation. Periodically check on the tea.
