How to Store Longjing Tea and Methods Available

Tea News · May 06, 2025

Longjing Tea can be stored using the bag storage method or refrigeration method. The bag storage method involves placing the tea in an aluminum foil bag, squeezing out the air inside, sealing the bag, and placing it in a cool, dry place without any odors. The refrigeration method involves first packing the tea in an aluminum foil bag, then placing it in an odorless tin can, sealing the lid, and storing it in the refrigerator.

1. Lime Crock Storage Method

Prepare a crock made of clay or porcelain, a dry cloth bag, a small amount of quicklime (which can be purchased at a pharmacy), and a sheet of rough paper to wrap the Longjing tea. Place the quicklime into the cloth bag and then into the crock, making sure the quicklime covers the bottom of the crock. Wrap the Longjing tea into a flat shape and place it in the crock. This method is suitable for storing small amounts of Longjing tea.

2. Refrigerator Storage Method

This is the simplest method. Generally, tea comes with an outer package and an inner package. Simply tighten the lid and place it in the refrigerator's chill compartment. If you have loose tea bags, you can add an outer package before placing them in the fridge. When storing tea in the fridge, remember not to open it immediately when taking it out. Wait until its temperature approaches room temperature to avoid condensation and dampness.

3. Thermos Storage Method

Find a thermos as a container. Fill the thermos with dried tea leaves, tightly packed. Seal the mouth of the thermos with a cork and apply wax around the cork to seal it, then wrap it with adhesive tape. Since there is little air and stable temperature in the thermos, this method works well and is simple to do.

4. Food Bag Storage Method

First, wrap the tea in white paper, then in a piece of kraft paper, and place it in a plastic food bag with no gaps, squeezing out the air and sealing the bag. Then, place another food bag over it and seal it in the same manner. Finally, put it in a dry and odorless, airtight metal bucket.

These are the home storage methods for Longjing tea. However, I still advise all tea lovers that Longjing tea tastes best when fresh and does lose flavor over time.
