Tea is divided into six categories, and the storage time after opening varies depending on the type of tea. Green Tea and Yellow Tea can generally be stored for around 2 to 3 months after being opened. These types of teas are highly susceptible to oxidation and change, so it's best to consume them as soon as possible. Black Tea and Oolong Tea can be stored for 6 to 12 months after opening. Dark tea (Hei Cha) and Pu'er tea can be stored long-term if properly preserved after opening.
How Soon Does Tea Spoil After Opening:
Once opened, tea does not last long and can become damp within days. This is because tea easily absorbs moisture due to its porous nature and large surface area. If not stored properly (excluding dark tea), tea can quickly deteriorate and stale. Therefore, it is recommended to store it well.
The Best Way to Store Tea:
Refrigerator Storage: Place the tea in a dry, odorless container that can be sealed and put it in the refrigerator's cold compartment. If there is a small amount of very dry tea, it can also be packaged in two layers of moisture-proof film bags and sealed before placing it in the refrigerator.
The basic requirements for storing tea are: one, it must be dry; two, it should be kept at a low temperature (generally 0-5°C is suitable). Below are some other methods for storing tea:
1. Canister Storage Method
Put the tea into a tin tea can with a double lid, preferably filling it completely to reduce the amount of air inside. Seal both lids tightly and use tape to seal any gaps. Put the tea can into two layers of nylon bags and seal the bag openings.
2. Thermos Storage Method
Place the tea into a dry thermos and tighten the lid, sealing the bottle opening with white wax.
Note: The moisture content of tea during storage should not exceed 5% (for green tea) to 7% (for black tea). You can dry or roast the tea before storing it. Ensure that the tools used for roasting or drying the tea are clean without any oil residue or odd smells. Use a gentle heat when drying to avoid burning or breaking the tea leaves or contaminating them with other odors.
