When it comes to developing a good patina on a purple clay Teapot, does the type of Tea matter? Does more expensive tea result in a better-looking patina?

In fact, the quality of the tea has no bearing on the patina. It is related to the type of tea and the method used to nurture the pot, rather than the cost of the tea determining the quality of the patina.

Oil-rich teas, such as Tie Guan Yin, release their oils naturally during the brewing process, making the development of a patina relatively quick and resulting in an ancient and lustrous finish.

Teas like ripe Pu-erh, Black Tea, and Tie Guan Yin are particularly effective for nurturing the pot.

There are two methods of nurturing the pot: one is by pouring tea over the pot, allowing the pot to absorb the tea, and then rinsing with hot water and wiping clean with a tea cloth to prevent tea stains from remaining on the surface. Over time, these stains can be difficult to remove and may damage the appearance of the pot. This method produces visible results quickly and is commonly practiced.

The other method is internal nurturing, where the pot is not poured over with tea during the brewing process; instead, it is occasionally rinsed with hot water but not with tea. This method takes longer to produce results, but the patina that develops is more enduring and stable, emerging from within the pot itself.

Additionally, the clay of the Purple Clay Teapot plays a role. Better-quality clay is more likely to develop a patina. For example, clay that has been hand-kneaded retains much of its sandy texture, unlike machine-processed clay which is more finely ground. Hand kneading leaves larger gaps between the sand particles, making the clay more porous and thus more breathable, facilitating the development of a patina. Those who have purchased a pot from me can clearly notice this difference.

Thin-walled pots also develop a patina more quickly due to the thinness of the walls allowing tea oils to penetrate more easily.

To achieve a beautiful patina on a purple clay teapot, the type of tea alone is not the only factor to consider.
