Tracing the Origins of Tea in Wa Village

Tea News · May 06, 2025

In a place where clouds and mist gather, high mountains produce fine Tea. In Shuikuan Village, Wa Yi and Miao Ethnic Township, Longyang District, at an altitude of over 2,200 meters, there are more than 5,000 mu (approximately 670,000 plants) of tea trees scattered across the continuous mountain range. The tea trees, which have been cultivated since 1958, have grown into tall trees ranging from 3 to 5 meters in height. They absorb sunlight and dew in the dense forest, making them rare treasures in the eyes of tea experts.

Tracing the Origins of Tea in Wa Village-1

In Wa Village, the tea from Shuikuan is widely recognized as high-quality. The unique growing environment endows Shuikuan tea with exceptional quality and greater potential for processing, but due to a lack of systematic development and promotion, most of it is produced and sold by villagers through simple stir-frying methods, remaining unknown outside the remote mountains.

In recent years, the Party Committee and government of Wa Village have sought breakthroughs in various ways. While continuously engaging with related enterprises, they have led the way in e-commerce live streaming and cooperative affiliations to open up sales channels. In 2025, through Douyin live streaming and cooperation with affiliated entities, they sold 7,500 catties of homemade Shuikuan White Tea produced by villagers, generating revenue of 300,000 RMB. In April 2024, Shuikuan Village entered into an organic wild tea garden cooperation project with a tea company in Kunming, adopting a cooperative model involving “Party organization-led cooperatives + enterprise + farmers.” This not only increases farmers' income but also strengthens the village's collective economy. The project includes sub-projects such as fresh leaf procurement, Tea processing, and tea garden tourism, and construction of a tea processing factory is currently underway.
