History and Folklore
“Tea as a drink originated with the divine farmer Shennong,” according to the “Tea Classic.” Records state, “Shennong tasted a hundred Herbs and encountered 72 poisons, which were cured by tea.” The Chinese nation is the first to discover, utilize, and enjoy tea, so tea originated in China and spread worldwide. According to “The Waterways Classic, Chapter on the Re River,” when the Yellow Emperor's eldest son, Changyi, was traveling and hunting along the river, he contracted an epidemic disease and felt feverish and stifled. He saw the tea flowers blooming on Mount Bailing by the riverbank and chewed and swallowed the tender leaves, gradually recovering from his illness. He then taught the locals to plant rice in the valleys and tea on the slopes. Thus, Tea culture spread throughout China. The “Tea Classic” also records that Sima Xiangru was a tea enthusiast who couldn't go a day without it. He was commissioned by Emperor Wu of Han to build roads over the Xiangling Mountains and bridges over the Sunshui River (today's Anning River). When setting up the Dazuo County in Yanbian, Sima Xiangru drank wild Guosheng Tea picked from Mount Bailing every day. Relevant records in the “Tea Classic” indicate that tea in southwestern China (Yunnan and Sichuan) has a long history. In Chapter 89 of “Romance of the Three Kingdoms,” “Wuxianghou Zhuge Liang Uses Four Tricks, Southern Barbarian King Meng Huo Is Captured Five Times,” it describes how the Shu army crossed the Lu River (now in Yanbian County), pursued the barbarian soldiers, and was invaded by miasma, leaving Zhuge Liang at a loss. Meng Huo's brother, Meng Jie, helped them by collecting wild garlic and Chinese celery, advising everyone to chew a leaf to ward off the miasma. After years of research by experts and scholars, it was determined that the garlic and Chinese celery mentioned by Luo Guanzhong refer to wild Guosheng tea! Since Zhuge Liang's southern campaign, local sericulture and tea planting flourished, and the tradition of tea cultivation has continued to this day.
Although the cultivation of Guosheng Tea dates back to early times, its fame came late due to its limited production. From traditional hand-processing to mechanization, and eventually winning international gold medals, Guosheng Tea has gained a reputation both at home and abroad.
