A Leisurely Half-Day, Tinged with the Fragrance of Tea

Tea News · May 06, 2025

Wandering through life, a Cup of Tea in hand, watching the steam rise and swirl, seeing the myriad facets of human existence. Like life itself, tea is subtle yet flavorful, humble yet content. It reveals both bitterness and Sweetness, clarity and astringency.

Life has its ups and downs, crossing one obstacle after another, ascending peak after peak, much like how tea is steeped time and again, transforming from greenness to maturity, ultimately reaching a state of flavorlessness.

Lin Qingxuan once said: “For any fine tea, the first infusion is bitter, the second fragrant, the third rich, the fourth clear, and the fifth light. After this, even the best tea becomes tasteless.” Indeed, it mirrors the five stages of life: youthful innocence, the fragrance of young adulthood, the weight of middle age, the reminiscence of strength, and the blandness of old age.

Sitting alone on a quiet night, brewing a pot of hot tea, watching the steam gently rise, my thoughts also become enveloped in the warmth.

The tangle of thoughts and emotions, under the permeation of tea, slowly moisten and unfold, floating in the warmth, and a hesitant heart is once again gradually relieved by the tea's aroma.

Drinking Tea can be a simple affair; it can also be complex. From simplicity to complexity, and back to simplicity again. To savor the taste of tea as enjoyed by ancient people, one doesn't need a time machine.

There are many dimensions to tea. Some people come across a tea plantation through a piece of porcelain or a single cup, while others are moved by a cup of tea, get to know a tea connoisseur, attend a tea gathering, and don an outfit of simplicity, all leading them to fall in love with tea.

Sanmao said, “Tea: the first infusion is as bitter as life, the second as sweet as love, the third as faint as a breeze.”

Shedding the dust of travel from my heart, I borrow the time of a tea session to interpret the joys and sorrows of past events, understanding the meaning of taking and letting go in life, and the allegory of letting everything fade into the background. Life is full of such undulations.

A wisp of tea fragrance tinges the years, awakening in a clear water the purity, sweetness, and aftertaste of tea.
