In April, after months of dormancy, Tea trees sprout new buds and the air fills with the scent of fine tea. Amidst the 80,000-mu tea plantation base, tea farmers carry baskets on their backs, moving through the rows to pick the tenderest leaves. Here, you can also encounter Hakka folks singing mountain songs across hills, and enjoy the most delightful moments as they take breaks from their work to Brew tea amidst the rising smoke.
Zijin County is located in the east-central part of Guangdong Province. It is renowned for its tea production, with a history of nearly 700 years. It is recognized as one of China's top 100 tea-producing counties and a charming tea town. As of 2025, the tea planting area in Zijin County has reached 80,000 mu, and it is expected that by 2025, the total tea planting area will reach 100,000 mu, with a total output of 5,000 tons.
After the spring rains, mist shrouds the high mountains, and dewdrops glisten on the tea leaves. Climbing up into the hills, standing halfway up, the spring breeze blows against your face. Hakka women picking tea hum folk songs while gathering the first gifts of the mountains for the year, marking the first harvest season of the new agricultural cycle.
The fully grown tea leaves are tender and plump, with long and straight tea shoots. No one would have thought that after being nibbled on by tiny green leafhoppers, these leaves, processed through unique techniques, could produce such honey-scented tea. After the fresh tea leaves are picked by hand, they undergo processes like fixation, rolling, and drying to make Green Tea with a sweet and mellow flavor; or Black Tea, with a brown liquor and a rich, sweet taste, akin to the hospitality of the Hakka people.
Zijin Leafhopper Tea is known as “the bird's nest of teas.” In recent years, Zijin County has aimed to “expand and strengthen the Zijin Leafhopper Tea industry to boost rural revitalization,” focusing on expanding scale, strengthening brands, improving quality, integrating tourism and culture, and increasing benefits. With towns like Zicheng, Longwo, Suzhou, and Nanling at the center of tea industry development, they radiate and drive integrated growth throughout the county.
Today, Zijin grows nearly 40 varieties of tea, including Jin Xuan and Yunnan small-leaf types. One tree at a time, one plantation at a time, Zijin is painting a new picture of rural revitalization, with the tea industry becoming a distinctive and wealth-creating industry. In 2025, Zijin Leafhopper Tea rose to become one of the three famous teas in Guangdong. These small leaves have truly become a major industry enriching the people.
In the ancient paths and pavilions of the tea gardens, sipping a cup of Zijin Leafhopper Tea, you can sit and watch the sea of clouds and sunrise. Strolling leisurely through the vast tea plantations of Zijin, every snapshot captures a scenic masterpiece.
During the peak tea-picking season before and after Qingming Festival and Grain Rain, many tea lovers come here to walk the tea trails, pick tea leaves, and see the sea of clouds. Here, savoring the fragrant tea, you can feel the warmth of the Hakka people. Just like how a sip of Leafhopper tea lingers in the mouth, leaving a lasting impression.
