Tea News · May 06, 2025

Bada and Xiding were once separate townships; they merged in 2005 and are now collectively known as Xiding Township. This is a border mountain area primarily inhabited by the Hani and Bulang ethnic groups, located in the western part of Menghai County, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. To the west, it faces Myanmar across the river with a national boundary of 54.5 kilometers. Xiding Township is one of the main Tea-producing towns in Menghai County, with a long history of tea cultivation, processing, consumption, and trade. Tea has always been a traditional pillar industry for Xiding Township and an important source of income for its diverse ethnic communities. The ancient tea tree resources in Xiding Township consist of two categories: wild tea tree clusters and cultivated ancient tea gardens. Wild tea trees are mainly found in the Dahan Mountain of Hesong, while cultivated ancient tea gardens are distributed in Bulang villages such as Zhanglang, Manmaidui, and Manpana. Xiding Township features undulating mountains, crisscrossing ravines, complex terrain, and diverse landforms. Hills, rivers, hillslopes, and valleys intertwine, creating a unique landscape where the climate varies significantly over short distances and different seasons can be experienced on a single mountain. The cloud sea here is especially spectacular and serves as a signature feature of Xishuangbanna.

The Bulang Xiding tea mountain is located in the Bulang Xiding Village Group under the jurisdiction of Xiding Village Committee in Xiding Township. It has been managed by the Bulang people for generations. The ecological environment in Bulang Xiding is excellent, and the tea trees grow well. There are 1,215 acres of ancient tea gardens situated on hill slopes around 1,400 meters above sea level, with trees ranging from 100 to 200 years old. The leaves of these tea trees are soft and yellow-green in color.

Bada is a Bulang term that means “a place with the footprint of a fairy.” Bada tea mountain boasts abundant resources of wild ancient tea trees and is the most concentrated area of such resources in Xishuangbanna. In 1962, a wild tea tree estimated to be 1,700 years old was discovered in the primeval forest of Dahan Mountain in Hesong. The “ten-thousand mu tea garden base” opened by the Menghai Tea Factory in 1988 has become one of the raw material sources for “Dayi” tea. Bada tea is characterized by a bitter and astringent taste, a notable aftertaste, rapid salivation, an orange-yellow liquor that is clear and bright, glossy tea leaves, and a fragrance reminiscent of plums or honey.
