Preserving Unused Purple Clay Teapots: Tips and Tricks!

Tea News · May 06, 2025

A Purple Clay Teapot that has been used for 2-3 months, or one of many in a collection that doesn't get regular use, will often be set aside.

How should these Teapots be maintained and stored? Today, Luyitang shares four key points to keep in mind.

Preserving Unused Purple Clay Teapots: Tips and Tricks!-1

Thoroughly Dry the Teapot

A used purple clay teapot must be thoroughly dried; there should be no moisture inside the pot.

To check if the teapot is dry, place a piece of tissue paper inside, cover it, and check the next day. If there is still moisture present, the teapot should not be wrapped up or placed in a box, as this can lead to mold growth on any Tea residue inside.

Storage Location

Teaware should be stored in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight.

Avoid placing the teapot in damp locations. Ideally, you should have a dedicated shelf or cabinet for storing your teapots.

Place Tea Leaves Inside

When the teapot is not in use for an extended period, add some dry tea leaves to the pot. These leaves should be of the same type of tea that the teapot is typically used for.

Periodically check if the tea leaves inside the teapot have become moist. If they are, remove them immediately, open the lid, and let the teapot air out until it is completely dry. This prevents mold growth on any tea residue inside the teapot.

Tea Leaves Absorb Moisture

Tea leaves are highly susceptible to absorbing moisture and odors. There is always some humidity in the air, which can enter the teapot through the spout and lid. If there are dry tea leaves inside the teapot, they will absorb this moisture, helping to maintain a dry environment within the pot.

Regular Cleaning

The exterior of a purple clay teapot should be regularly cleaned and wiped down with a soft cloth.

This is true for both new and old teapots. Keeping the surface clean and polished enhances the luster and smoothness of the clay, improving its tactile quality over time.
