Purple Clay Trivia: Why You Shouldn-t Buy These "Pretty" Teapots!

Tea News · May 06, 2025

In a market economy, goods of all kinds are mixed together. Certain unscrupulous clay and Teapot merchants, driven by profit, exploit management loopholes. To catch the eye of novice teapot buyers with colors and patterns and to achieve certain color effects, they add some necessary, stable, trace amounts of oxidized metals to the clay. This is not uncommon.

However, these Teapots must be fired thoroughly, commonly known as “fully matured” teapots. Otherwise, unreacted metal ions will remain in the “half-matured” teapots. When combined with Tea containing Tannic acid and alkaloids, these can be harmful to the human body.

Teapots fired at sufficient temperatures do not retain bright colors; to achieve vivid colors, the kiln temperature cannot reach the required level. If the kiln temperature is inadequate, metal ions will remain, so you should definitely avoid choosing the colorful “half-matured” teapots.

High-Quality Clay

High-quality clay, when paired with the right firing temperature, will exhibit reflective light under natural lighting, commonly known as “luster.” The richer the luster, the better the quality of the clay.

When boiling water is poured into the teapot, the surface color of the clay darkens, commonly known as “color deepening.” The greater the change in color, the better the quality of the clay.
