Methods for storing ripe tea

1. Dry and ventilated place: Pu'er tea cakes are best stored in a dry and ventilated area, ideally inside clay jars or pots. The storage location should avoid direct sunlight and rain, as direct exposure to sunlight can cause the tea to turn sour.

2. Maintain an appropriate temperature: Maintaining an appropriate temperature is essential for the “aging” of Pu'er tea cakes. Ideally, store the Pu'er tea cakes near a window on a balcony, which facilitates their interaction with oxygen in the air – a fundamental point for why Pu'er tea can aid in weight loss. Ensure that the tea cakes are not exposed to direct sunlight, as excessively high temperatures can also cause the tea to ferment too quickly and turn sour.

3. Avoid moisture: Do not store Pu'er tea cakes in excessively humid areas. Wrap them in Xuan paper and odorless moisture-absorbing paper and store them in a jar to prevent dampness and spoilage.

4. Avoid places with strong odors.

Optimal periods for drinking ripe Pu'er tea:

The first optimal period is 2 to 3 months after production. At this stage, ripe Pu'er tea has a strong pile flavor, is hot in nature, and still contains water taste. However, it also exhibits the unique fragrance, Sweetness, and thickness characteristic of ripe Pu'er tea.

The second optimal period is after 3 years. After being stored for 3 years, most of the pile flavor has faded, and the internal quality gradually stabilizes and precipitates. Sweetness, smoothness, and richness become more pronounced, offering a clean, sweet, and fragrant taste experience.

The third optimal period is after 10 years. This is the best time to enjoy ripe Pu'er tea, characterized by a mild nature, rich taste, pleasant sweetness, pure aroma, smooth texture, full body, and fine mouthfeel.

According to the characteristics of ripe Pu'er tea, its quality and flavor improve significantly after being stored for 2 to 3 years. At this point, the tea's nature transitions from hot to mild, and the warehouse smell is largely negligible. After waking the tea, there are virtually no off-flavors, and some may exhibit a faint aged aroma.

10 to 30 years.

Pu'er tea is divided into raw and ripe varieties. Ripe tea undergoes fermentation during the pile process, transforming many of the tea's components. Therefore, its shelf life is shorter than that of raw Pu'er tea.

Generally speaking, within a 10-year shelf life, the concept of “the older, the better” applies to Pu'er tea. After 15 to 20 years, the quality of ripe Pu'er tea begins to decline. Raw tea, which has not undergone artificial fermentation, has a shelf life of at least 15 to 20 years. Slowly transforming raw Pu'er tea can potentially have a shelf life of over 30 years.
