Machine engraving comes in two forms: laser engraving and computer engraving. Both methods are similar, involving post-processing on finished Purple Clay Teapot products for engraving and illustration. This method is very affordable in the market. However, the effect of machine engraving is rather rigid with uniform depth, generally catering to the low-end market.
Laser engraving works by burning a layer of purple clay into ash on the surface of the pot, causing the engraved area to recess.
Here is an example of the result:
(Machine engraving results in a rigid appearance with uniform depth.)
Machine engraving is fast and inexpensive, with a consistent depth of recess. Sellers typically offer free engraving or charge only 5-10 yuan for engraving.
Computer engraving involves sandblasting. The design to be engraved is first created on a computer and then printed onto a plastic plate, which is cut out like paper-cutting. The cut-out pattern is then placed against the pot and blasted with a high-pressure air gun to create the design. Compared to laser engraving, this method produces deeper engravings, but the depth remains uniform.
Laser engraving tends to be shallow and uniform in depth; computer engraving, being a form of sandblasting, creates deeper engravings but still with uniform depth. The overall effect is similar to laser engraving.
Hand engraving is done on the raw body of the purple clay Teapot after it has dried, before firing. Prices can range from tens to thousands of yuan depending on quality. Hand engraving allows for variations in depth, with lines and surfaces adjusted according to the desired emphasis, offering flexibility. Techniques include single-blade and double-blade engraving.
Single-blade engraving requires a continuous stroke, demanding solid skills and a good sense of composition from the engraver. Double-blade engraving, more challenging than single-blade, requires deep cuts that must navigate the granular texture of the purple clay, achieving either clean and crisp or rounded and smooth results, making it a versatile technique.
