Hai University Students Conduct Tea Industry Research in Yongfu, Fujian

Tea News · May 07, 2025

The 20th National Congress Report of the Communist Party of China explicitly stated that “we should strengthen the in-depth integration of industry, academia, and research led by enterprises.” The in-depth integration of industry, academia, and research has become a new requirement for the national innovation system in the new development stage. Yongfu Town, the core area of the Longyan City Zhangping Taiwan Farmers' Entrepreneurship Park in Fujian Province, is the most concentrated and largest Tea production base on the mainland invested in by Taiwanese tea farmers. After understanding that the brand awareness of Yongfu's Taiwanese high Mountain tea was insufficient and the “tea-tourism” industry had strong cyclical characteristics leading to poor returns, the practice team started from the concept of “in-depth integration of industry, academia, and research.” Through field investigations, interviews, questionnaires, and other forms, they visited the government, tea enterprises, and tea merchants. They also exchanged ideas with a National People's Congress representative to understand the specific development situation and challenges of the Yongfu tea industry and proposed solutions.

Surveying the Macro Situation and Analyzing the Current State

On the morning of July 10, members of the practice team went to Zhangping City to participate in a talent exchange forum co-hosted by the Tianjin University Youth League Committee, the Longyan City Youth League Committee, and other departments. The theme was “Youth from Both Sides Discuss Development; Universities and Localities Cooperate to Assist Revitalization.” Together, they explored new models for integrated development across the strait and new ideas for rural revitalization. As student representatives, members of the practice team made proposals and expressed the sentiments of young people across the strait.

On the morning of July 11, the practice team went to the Yongfu Town government for a discussion with Secretary Wen Zhiqi of the Yongfu Town Youth League Committee and interviewed Chen Enqi, a government intern under the “Sail Plan,” to gain a macroscopic understanding of the development process and current state of Yongfu's Taiwanese high mountain tea. During the exchange, members of the practice team gained a deeper understanding of relevant policies for Taiwanese high mountain tea and became clearer about the weak points in tea garden development. Gradually, the focus of the discussion shifted to how to promote the rural revitalization cause in Yongfu Town from multiple aspects and elements through perspectives such as “tea-tourism” and “Yongfu Taiwanese high mountain tea x university research and practice.”

Visiting Tea Enterprises and Conducting Detailed Research

After deep reflection and discussions with Mr. Chen Yibin, a local florist, the members of the practice team finally determined a practical plan: “Building an online platform connecting flower farmers, Taiwanese businessmen, and major universities in Yongfu Town.” To explore the feasibility of this plan, the practice team visited tea enterprises to truly experience the atmosphere of integrated development across the strait in Yongfu and to understand the actual situation of the Taiwanese high mountain tea industry.

On the morning of July 12, to understand the thoughts of Taiwanese youths on the practical plan, the practice team visited Mr. Wu Yaoren, a representative of Taiwanese youths, a “river chief” among Taiwanese compatriots, and a rural revitalization advisor. Mr. Wu told the story of how he came to Yongfu from Taiwan to continue his family's tea business. “I hope to extend the tea mountains into secondary and tertiary industries, building a tea garden that integrates planting, production, marketing, culture, tourism, and research,” Mr. Wu once said. Therefore, he expressed approval and support for our idea of constructing a platform to attract college students to conduct social practice at Yongfu's tea enterprises to promote the multi-faceted development of industries such as Yongfu's Taiwanese high mountain tea and enhance the brand awareness of Yongfu's Taiwanese high mountain tea.

On the evening of July 12, after understanding that the sales and production cooperative plays a role in uniting Taiwanese businessmen and realizing that cooperation with the cooperative would be more convenient and efficient, the practice team visited Vice President Chen Lianfeng of the Taiwanese businessman sales and production cooperative. From President Chen, we learned that the local government helped Taiwanese businessmen solve issues related to settling down, children's education, and financing difficulties, providing strong support for the development of Taiwanese businessmen in Yongfu. At the same time, the investment and factory establishment of Taiwanese businessmen and the development of the tea industry significantly promoted the economic development of Yongfu and increased local employment rates. Among them, the Taiping Cherry Blossom Garden created by Taiwanese businessman Mr. Xie Dongqing attracted tourists from all over the country to visit, becoming one of Yongfu's landmark buildings and earning Yongfu the reputation of being “Mainland's Ali Mountain,” greatly promoting the development of the tourism industry. After proposing our idea, President Chen indicated that cooperation with the cooperative would be a good choice.

On July 13, to gain a deeper understanding of the actual situation of the tea factory, the development process of the tea industry, and the opinions of Taiwanese businessmen on our plan, the practice team conducted field research at Hongding Tea Factory. The tea produced by Hongding Tea Factory has been selected as “Beijing Forbidden City Tribute Tea,” the official tea for the ninth meeting of the BRICS countries, and the official tea of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council. Led by Mr. Lin Zhichun, the head of tea production at Hongding Tea Factory, a Taiwanese tea expert, a “National Tea Craftsman – Tea Master,” and a senior engineer of tea production, the practice team visited the tea factory and learned about the entire process of tea production. From picking, fixing, withering to baking, the tea factory uses mechanized production on the basis of traditional tea-making techniques, maintaining quality and output while still adhering to high-quality standards for tea. During the visit, the members of the practice team deeply experienced the spirit of excellence and pursuit of excellence of Hongding Tea professionals.
