Pu'er ripened Tea does not have a specific expiration date and can be stored for a long time. However, this does not mean that it can be stored indefinitely; it is generally suitable for drinking after being stored for three to five years. In comparison, Pu'er raw tea needs to be stored for around ten years to reach its optimal drinking period.
How Long is the Shelf Life of Pu'er Ripened Tea?
Ripened Pu'er tea is best consumed between 5 to 10 years, with a general limit of no more than 20 years.
The storage of Pu'er tea should be adjusted based on the situation. Generally, new raw teas can be stored for about ten years to achieve a satisfactory quality. For fermented ripened teas, there's no need to store them for decades; typically, a storage period of 2 to 3 years can elevate their quality to a desirable level. Indefinite storage will inevitably cause the beneficial components in the tea to decompose and oxidize, thus losing the unique flavors of Pu'er tea.
The shelf life of tea varies depending on the type of tea. Different teas have different shelf lives. For example, Yunnan Pu'er tea improves with age and can be stored for 10 to 20 or even 30 years. Similarly, aged Wuyi Rock Tea often has a richer aroma and flavor. Hei tea from Hunan, Fu brick tea from Hubei, and Liu Bao tea from Guangxi also improve in quality if stored properly.
Raw tea, which has not undergone artificial rapid fermentation, has better storability and develops a unique aging fragrance. As the storage time extends, the color, aroma, and taste of the tea significantly improve. However, the optimal shelf life of Pu'er tea is only around 10 years. The concept of “the older, the better” applies only within the shelf life.
When raw tea is stored under suitable conditions for three to five years, it undergoes a series of complex reactions such as oxidation, polymerization, decomposition, and degradation, producing large amounts of beneficial microorganisms. The polyphenols gradually oxidize, while the content of theaflavins, thearubigins, and theabrownins increases, resulting in a matured aroma and a mellow taste. Ripened Pu'er tea uses artificial rapid fermentation to make the tea nature more moderate, with a red and bright soup color and a thick, sweet aftertaste.
The natural conversion space for the tea nature has already been utilized, so the storage method can be appropriately adjusted. For instance, it can be stored in a naturally ventilated, odorless, and non-humid environment. If possible, using a clean, odorless, and well-ventilated large clay jar to store the ripened tea can help maintain its tea aroma without dispersing. Within five years, the taste and quality will gradually improve.
