Legend has it that at the foot of Liangying Mountain lived a widow who sold mountain grape wine. She was known for her generous and kind nature, and the wine she brewed was mellow and sweet. People respected her and called her Immortal Wine Maiden. One winter, it was bitterly cold. Early one morning, as Immortal Wine Maiden opened her door, she found a skinny, poorly dressed man lying outside, who appeared to be a beggar. She checked his breathing and, finding him still alive, carried him inside. She fed him warm soup and half a cup of wine, and the man gradually regained consciousness. Gratefully, he said, "Thank you for saving my life. I am paralyzed. If I go out, I will either freeze or starve to death. Please be kind and let me stay a few more days." Immortal Wine Maiden was troubled. As the saying goes, "A widow's door is full of gossip." Housing such a man would surely invite rumors. But then she thought, she couldn't just let him freeze or starve. Finally, she agreed to let him stay temporarily.
As expected, gossip about Immortal Wine Maiden quickly spread. People distanced themselves from her, and fewer customers came to buy wine each day. Despite her suffering, she continued to care for the man with all her heart. Eventually, when no one came to buy wine and she could no longer sustain herself, the man left without saying goodbye. Worried, Immortal Wine Maiden searched for him everywhere. On a hillside, she met an old man with white hair, struggling to carry a load of firewood. As she went to help him, the old man suddenly fell, scattering the firewood. With closed eyes and trembling lips, he weakly called out, "Water, water..." Where could she find water on a barren hillside? Immortal Wine Maiden bit her middle finger, and blood immediately flowed. She placed her finger to the old man's lips, but he suddenly vanished. A gentle breeze blew, and a yellow cloth bag descended from the sky. Inside were many small yellow paper packets and a note that read: "The Moon Palace bestows osmanthus seeds as a reward for the kind-hearted. Where virtue is high, osmanthus trees grow green; where longevity is great, the trees bloom fully. Pick the flowers to brew osmanthus wine, first for parents. Wu Gang helps the virtuous and brings disaster upon the deceitful." Only then did Immortal Wine Maiden understand that both the paralyzed man and the old firewood carrier were transformations of Wu Gang.
When this story spread, people came from far and wide to request osmanthus seeds. Kind-hearted people planted the seeds, which quickly grew into osmanthus trees, blooming with fragrant flowers that filled their courtyards with glory. Those with ill intentions found that the seeds would not take root or sprout, making them feel ashamed and leading them to reform. Everyone was grateful to Immortal Wine Maiden, for her good deeds had moved Wu Gang, the immortal who tends the osmanthus tree in the moon palace, to scatter osmanthus seeds into the human world. From then on, osmanthus flowers and osmanthus wine came into existence.
