The Origin and Production Area of Yuhua Tea

Tea News · Dec 15, 2025

Yuhua Tea is a specialty of Nanjing, named after the Rain Flower Terrace located outside the Zhonghua Gate of Nanjing.

In the spring of 1959, Yuhua Tea was successfully developed by the Zhongshan Cemetery Administration in the Purple Mountain area, giving Nanjing's tea its own unique quality and character.

Nanjing features a harmonious blend of mountains, rivers, the city, and forests, creating picturesque and magnificent scenery. The famous Rain Flower Terrace was originally called "Treasure Gathering Mountain." Legend has it that during the reign of Emperor Wu of Liang, Master Yunguang preached scriptures here, and heavenly flowers fell like rain, hence the name "Rain Flower Terrace."

Due to the humid climate and rolling hills in the Nanjing region, it is an excellent area for cultivating tea trees. Yuhua Tea has a dark green, needle-like appearance with straight, tightly rolled leaves, visible pekoe, and resembles pine needles. It symbolizes the heroic, unyielding, and evergreen spirit of revolutionary martyrs, which is why it was named Yuhua Tea.
