The Origin of West Lake Longjing Tea

Tea News · Dec 16, 2025

West Lake Longjing tea is produced in the area surrounding Shifeng Peak, Longjing, Wuyun Mountain, and Hupao Spring in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. In 2001, the General Administration of Quality Supervision implemented a policy of origin protection. The Hangzhou municipal government delineated a protected area of 168 square kilometers based on the actual production scope of West Lake Longjing. Only tea produced within this area can be called "West Lake Longjing."

Places like Shifeng Mountain, Meijiawu, Wengjiashan, Yunqi, Hupao, and Lingyin are lush with dense forests and bamboo groves, where tea gardens lie enveloped in mist and shade. This region boasts exceptional ecological conditions: a mild climate, ample rainfall, an average annual temperature of 16°C, and annual precipitation of about 1500 mm. Especially during the spring tea season, there is often drizzling rain and flowing streams. The soil is deep and mostly sandy loam, which aligns with what Lu Yu described in the Tang Dynasty's "The Classic of Tea" as "gravelly soil being superior," matching the high-quality Longjing tea grown in sandy loam. The tea plant varieties in the Longjing tea area have tender and small buds and leaves, rich in amino acids and various vitamins. The superior natural conditions and excellent plant varieties provide a favorable innate foundation for the high quality of Longjing tea.
