Hangzhou West Lake Longjing Tea: One of China's Top Ten Famous Teas

Tea News · Mar 06, 2026

West Lake Longjing tea, crowned as the best among China's famous teas, is produced in the hills surrounding West Lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.

For centuries, Hangzhou has been renowned worldwide not only for its picturesque West Lake but also for West Lake Longjing tea. Legend has it that Emperor Qianlong composed a poem titled 'Song of Watching Tea Picking' during an inspection in the Longjing tea region. The tea is graded based on its origin, with the 'Lion (Peak), Dragon (Well), Cloud (Habitation), Tiger (Run), and Plum (Home)' areas being the most prestigious, and West Lake Longjing tea is considered the finest. Longjing tea leaves are characterized by their straight, sharp, flat, and sleek appearance with a yellowish-green hue. When brewed, it releases a lasting, orchid-like fragrance; the liquor is apricot-green, clear and bright, with tender green leaves evenly shaped like standing buds, vivid and lively. Sipping the tea refreshes the mind, leaves a lingering fragrance between the teeth, and offers an endless aftertaste.
