Characteristics of the Rhinoceros Pond Ancient Tree Tea
Pasha is located in the southwest direction of Gelanghe Township, Menghai County, situated between Nannuoshan and Bulang Mountain, its tea embodies the charm of both mountain ranges. It is said that over 130 years ago, the old Ban Zhang Village was developed and inhabited by the ancestors of Pasha's villagers.
Pasha has the largest number of ancient tea trees in the Xishuangbanna tea region, with each village having its own ancient tea garden. The history of tea tree cultivation here can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty, planted by the Hani ancestors, with most trees being between 300 to 600 years old. The altitude here ranges from 1,500 to 1,800 meters, with year-round mist, abundant rainfall, lush vegetation, and rich forest floor detritus, resulting in vigorous growth of the tea trees, early budding periods, and a long picking season. The soil is fertile, with good water and mineral infiltration.
The Rhinoceros Pond ancient tree tea is located in the core area of Pasha, where the tea garden is dominated by large ancient tea trees, and protruding rocks can be seen, with many tea trees growing among them. Legend has it that rhinos once lived here, foraging and rolling about, which led the ancestors of Pasha to name this area Rhinoceros Pond. Although the rhinos have since become extinct, their former mud wallows can still be found. The ecosystem here is well-preserved, with high altitude and difficult terrain.
Upon entering the Rhinoceros Pond ancient tea garden, one can smell the fresh fragrance of plants mixed with earthy scents. The ancient tea garden blends seamlessly with the forest, evoking a sense of seclusion and beauty deep within the mountains.
The carefully selected first flush ancient tree tea from Rhinoceros Pond originates in the Zhongzhai village of Pasha. Made using traditional methods, it boasts a robust flavor with a slightly noticeable bitterness, a high and clear aroma, a refined texture, a full and smooth soup quality, and a strong aftertaste and salivation effect. Its mouthfeel is long-lasting. It is often described as having “seven parts of the Ban Zhang tea character and three parts of the Bingdao flavor,” earning it the title of “First Fragrant Lady of Menghai.” It is harmonious in strength and gentleness, with excellent potential for aging. The tea soup is full-bodied and incredibly smooth, leaving a refreshing sensation in the throat after drinking. The drinking experience can be summarized with the words “aromatic,” “sweet,” “refined,” and “smooth,” offering endless surprises and immersing the drinker in its charm.
