What are the methods for storing tea?

Theoretically, the ideal storage and preservation of Tea involves dry refrigeration, no oxygen (vacuumed or filled with nitrogen), and protection from light. However, due to various practical limitations, it is often not possible to meet all these conditions. Therefore, priority should be given to ensuring that the tea is kept dry, and other measures can then be taken.

What are the methods for storing tea?

Most tea purchased by households comes in cans or as loose tea, and since it is not usually consumed all at once, storage becomes an issue. Here are some common household methods for storing tea:

Plastic bag and aluminum foil bag storage method: It is best to select a plastic bag with a seal, specifically made for food storage, and one that is thicker and has a higher density is preferable. Do not use bags with odors or recycled plastic bags. After putting the tea into the bag, try to squeeze out as much air as possible; using a second plastic bag over the first can further improve the effect, and transparent plastic bags should not be exposed to sunlight. Storing tea in an aluminum foil bag works on the same principle as with plastic bags.

Metal can storage method: You can choose a metal can, such as a tin can, stainless steel can, or a can made of tightly woven material. If the can is new or previously stored other items with odors, you can place a small amount of tea residue inside, cover it, and shake the can lightly to rub the inner walls before discarding the tea. This helps remove any odors. There are stainless steel tea cans available on the market with double lids, which are convenient and practical. If you can also place the tea in a clean, odorless plastic bag and then put it in the can, sealing the lid with tape, this will be even better. Metal cans containing tea should be placed in a cool location, away from direct sunlight, odors, dampness, and heat sources. In this way, the can will be less likely to rust, and the rate of tea aging and deterioration can be slowed down. Tin cans have tight materials and are effective in preventing moisture, oxidation, blocking light, and preventing odors.

Ceramic jar storage method: Select a dry, odorless, and airtight ceramic jar. Wrap the tea in brown paper and place it around the sides of the jar. Place a bag of quicklime in the middle, and then place more wrapped tea on top. Once the jar is full, cover it tightly with cotton. The quicklime should be replaced every one to two months. This method uses the quicklime's ability to absorb moisture, keeping the tea dry and in good condition.

Tea is also a type of food. Apart from Pu'er, which is Fermented tea, other types of tea have expiration dates. The shelf life varies depending on factors such as the type of tea and growing conditions. If stored improperly, such as becoming damp and exceeding the acceptable moisture content, the tea may expire prematurely.

To determine whether tea has expired, you can check for signs of mold or a stale smell, whether Green Tea has turned red and the tea soup has darkened, and whether the concentration and freshness of the tea's flavor have diminished. Well-stored tea will typically change in aroma, color, tea soup, and flavor after being stored for a period of time, losing its fresh tea scent and developing a stale taste.
