Tips for Storing and Preserving Green Tea

Tea News · May 06, 2025

A Cup of green tea nourishes countless tea enthusiasts through the seasons.

When it comes to drinking green tea, freshness is key. Its production and sales season is very short, making high-quality green tea particularly sought after. Many enthusiasts stock up on enough to last them half a year or more during the Spring Tea season.

Now that many tea lovers have likely acquired their preferred green teas, understanding appropriate storage and preservation methods is essential.

Tips for Storing and Preserving Green Tea-1

Preserving Freshness in Stored Green Tea

Five Key Points

Low Temperature, Moisture Prevention, Light Avoidance, Sealing, and Odor Protection

Low-Temperature Storage

The most convenient and effective way to store green tea at home is by using refrigerator low-temperature storage. If you have a large quantity of tea, it's recommended to portion it out before storing it in the fridge. For short-term storage, keep the green tea in the refrigerator (0~5°C). For long-term storage, use the freezer (-18~-10°C).

Sealing Against Moisture and Odors

Green tea can spoil easily if it absorbs moisture and may even develop mold. It's crucial to seal the tea properly when storing it in the fridge, especially if it comes in paper packaging.

If the fridge is not dedicated solely to tea, take steps to prevent flavor contamination; consider using airtight metal cans or placing the tea in a resealable bag.

Avoiding Light and Oxidation

After taking the tea out for use, make sure to reseal it promptly and return it to the fridge. Prolonged exposure to air can cause the contents of the tea to undergo oxidation and other reactions, gradually diminishing its original flavor.

Allow to Warm Before Opening

When removing a canister of tea from the fridge, do not open it immediately. Allow some time for the temperature inside the canister to match the room temperature before opening. If opened too soon, condensation may form on the inner walls of the container, which can be absorbed by the tea.
