In recent years, Baohua Town in Nanjian County has leveraged the policies and financial support from Shanghai, along with its unique ancient Tea tree resources, to integrate the development of tea industry and rural tourism economy. The town has developed and protected over 3,000 ancient tea trees, constructed 21,600 mu (approx. 1,440 acres) of green organic tea gardens, and achieved an annual tea production of 16,900 tons, successfully forging a path for rural revitalization based on “tea tourism, tourism aiding agriculture, and integration of tea and tourism.”
Focusing on “tea tourism” to bring “small tea leaves” out of remote mountains. The high-quality tea in Baohua Town is nourished by the misty clouds at high altitudes along the Tropic of Cancer, making it particularly fragrant and flavorful. The tea industry has always been the pillar industry of Baohua Town. Since the comprehensive implementation of the rural revitalization strategy, Baohua Town has utilized funds from Shanghai-Yunnan cooperation, integrating over 10 million yuan into projects. These projects include the protection of ancient tea trees, construction of scenic walking paths on tea mountains, development of distinctive tea mountain guesthouses, and improvement of local aesthetics in the Yangmeishu–Laobuzi–Daqing–Gezhilie area. This has further enhanced the infrastructure within the region, transforming the Yangmeishu area into a popular destination for relaxation and entertainment for locals and tourists alike, as well as a great spot for tea tasting and sightseeing. Efforts are also made to promote the story of the “Lianli Tea,” a renowned ancient tea tree, to enhance the brand of Yangmeishu's ancient tea trees and bring the “small tea leaves” out of remote mountains.
Using tourism to aid agriculture, bringing the “large tea industry” into rural areas. In strict accordance with the goals set by the State Party Committee for “green and beautiful tea zones” and integrated development of agriculture and tourism, Baohua Town focuses on tourism to boost agriculture. It actively develops rural cultural tourism industries and conducts investment promotion activities, striving to build hotels and guesthouse economies. The town has successfully introduced Jinan Sanqian Tea Farmers Co., Ltd. and registered the “Wuliang Ancient Tree White Tea” brand. The Laobuzi Tea processing Facility and Qinglong Mountain Tea Processing Facility have been completed and are now operating under a model where Village-level collective funds are invested and dividends are shared. This has led to record-high revenue for the Yangmeishu Village's collective economy, with the price of fresh tea in the region doubling to 15 yuan per kilogram, making it the highest in the county. This significantly increases the income of local residents.
Integrating tea and tourism to pave a path to prosperity through “Tea culture.” Baohua Town adopts a development model of “households + cooperatives + strong village companies” and explores a “tea culture + tourism” development model. It aims to create a comprehensive tea-tourism experience zone that integrates tea planting, picking, processing, ecological sightseeing, cultural leisure, study tours, and cultural exhibitions. By closely combining tea culture, tea tourism, and the tea industry, the town extends the tea industry chain towards deeper integration of tea and tourism. This not only strengthens the village-level collective economy but also drives the development of the tea industry and increases the income of tea farmers, thereby improving the income of households and the village-level collective economy. The town is committed to protecting and developing the “Wuliang Mountain Ancient Tea Garden.”
