Why Should Pu-er Tea Be Stored in an Airtight Container?

Tea News · May 06, 2025

Sealing is a basic requirement for storing Tea. When tea comes into contact with air, the aromatic compounds within it gradually dissipate. The purpose of sealing is to confine the tea's aroma within the sealed bag, preventing the tea from becoming bland. Moreover, the drier the tea, the more likely it is to absorb moisture and odors from the air. If too much moisture is absorbed, the tea's moisture content will steadily rise, triggering secondary fermentation.

Why Should Pu'er Tea Be Stored in an Airtight Container?-1

The fermentation caused by an increase in moisture content is different from the desirable fermentation during production, and its effects are detrimental. At best, the tea may lose its aroma and become damp; at worst, it can mold and spoil, losing its value for consumption. If the tea absorbs too many odors, it will mask the tea's natural fragrance, resulting in a strange or mixed taste when brewed, which also diminishes its value for drinking. Therefore, sealing is a crucial requirement in the storage of tea. Whether it's tea intended for short-term consumption or long-term collection, it should not be exposed to the air for extended periods to prevent damage to its quality.

How Should Pu'er Tea Be Stored in an Airtight Container?

Single cakes (or bricks/tuos) of Pu'er tea are typically wrapped in paper, while multiple cakes are often packaged in bamboo shells or kraft paper, and full cases are packed in cardboard boxes or bamboo baskets.

For whole packages or cases of Pu'er tea, ensure they are protected against moisture and humidity by placing them in waterproof bags and storing them off the walls and ground in a clean, dry area free from odors.

For single cakes or opened cakes of Pu'er tea, simply wrapping them back up in paper isn't enough. Enthusiasts can place them in airtight bags or store them in tea jars after breaking them apart completely.

Large tea jars and cabinets can also be used for storing Pu'er tea.

Some enthusiasts remove the paper wrapping and store unwrapped cakes in jars or cabinets, which might seem closed but can still allow small amounts of moisture, dust, and foreign odors to adhere to the tea cakes.

From a resale perspective, even if the tea quality is good, few enthusiasts would be willing to buy unwrapped cakes. Therefore, it is best to store the tea along with its original packaging.
