Puer Tea is a post-Fermented tea that becomes more fragrant with age when stored under good conditions. Therefore, Puer tea should not be stored in the fridge, as the temperature is too low and the environment is relatively humid, which is not conducive to the transformation of Puer tea. Storing Puer tea in the fridge can easily cause the tea leaves to absorb strange odors or become moldy due to dampness. Therefore, it is not recommended to store Puer tea in the fridge.
Puer Tea Needs to be Stored in the Fridge?
The storage environment for Puer tea has high requirements. The environment cannot be too hot or too wet, and the place where you store the tea cannot have a strange smell; it must not be mixed with other items. Additionally, it needs to be stored away from light and not placed in a location that receives direct sunlight.
Therefore, it is best not to store Puer tea in the fridge. The fridge is humid and cold and can easily absorb odors from other foods. At home, you can use Ceramic jars, food-grade bags, or specialized cardboard boxes for storage. In short, preventing dampness and absorbing strange smells are key.
If we are concerned about high humidity in the southern air, during the rainy season, we can seal the tea in plastic bags, ensuring they are completely sealed. Otherwise, moisture will accumulate inside the bag without evaporating, quickly leading to mold formation.
After a week following the rainy season, when the humidity in the air has dropped significantly, the sealed bags can be removed from the tea. This ensures the tea does not mold during the rainy season and avoids storing it in a vacuum-like state continuously.
Tips for Storing Puer Tea
1. Puer tea is divided into raw and ripe teas, and they should be stored separately when preserving Puer tea.
2. The storage location should be off the ground and away from walls, as the ground can be damp, and placing the tea directly on the ground could lead to dampness and mold.
3. During the process of storing Puer tea, avoid exposing it to direct sunlight. Sunlight can significantly affect the taste of the tea, so this point should be noted.
4. The storage location for Puer tea must be far from places with smoke (cigarette smoke, cooking fumes) or strong aromas (perfume scents), as tea has a strong adsorption capacity and can easily absorb other odors.
When storing Puer tea at home, many conditions may not meet the ideal environment for storing Puer tea well. Therefore, we recommend using simple and convenient sealed storage methods. Whether it's a single cake, a whole bundle, or a whole box of Puer tea, wrap them in plastic bags for storage and then open them every three to five months to let some air in.
Using the fridge to store Puer tea is an incorrect method. During the storage process, Puer tea continues to change. If placed in the fridge, the active components within the tea would be inhibited, making it impossible for the tea to become “more fragrant with age.” Furthermore, fridges often store various foods, and Puer tea placed in the fridge can easily absorb other odors.
