Common Tea Brewing Method in Daily Life — The Thermal Mug Brewing Method

Tea News · May 06, 2025

To appreciate the graceful dance of buds and leaves in water, transparent glass cups that cool quickly have become the most common Tea brewing utensil. This has led to a misunderstanding that thermal mugs are unsuitable for brewing tea. In fact, thermal mugs can brew delicious tea infusions and are particularly suitable for use when traveling.

Thermal Mug Brewing Method

In high-temperature conditions, the tea and water remain together in the cup, causing substances such as polyphenols, Caffeine, and theanine from the tea leaves to continuously steep. Extended Steeping times can result in overly concentrated tea with a so-called “cooked taste.” However, with the right brewing techniques, you can still achieve a pleasant flavor.

Brewing Techniques

First, choose an appropriate material for your thermal mug.

The inner walls of thermal mugs are typically made of either high borosilicate glass or stainless steel, both offering insulation properties. High borosilicate glass thermal mugs are suitable for spring and summer seasons, while stainless steel thermal mugs are better suited for autumn and winter.

Second, control the amount of tea used.

Using Longjing tea as an example, the recommended tea-to-water ratio is around 1:190 (for instance, 2g:380mL). This results in a balanced infusion with low bitterness and a fresh, mellow taste.

Third, control the water temperature.

Again using Longjing tea as an example, a two-stage brewing method is recommended. For the first stage, use boiling water to moisten the dry tea leaves, ensuring they fully hydrate and unfurl, which helps release their flavors and aromas. After the initial soak, for the second stage, lower the water temperature. During winter, use water between 80–95°C; during summer, keep the water temperature at 60–65°C.
