Pu'er Tea is a unique type of tea native to Yunnan Province, China, with a long history. Its production involves distinctive fermentation and storage processes, resulting in unique flavors that are fragrant, flavorful, slightly bitter, and sweet. Today, we will introduce the method for brewing Pu'er tea.

How to Brew Pu'er Tea Properly-1

Breaking up the tea cake is a key step in brewing Pu'er tea. Pu'er tea comes in various forms such as cakes, bricks, and tuos, which tend to be tightly packed. Breaking the tea allows it to open up and release its aroma and flavor more effectively. A small trick is to use a tea needle to gently insert it into the edge of the tea cake, then twist the needle to gradually separate the leaves until the surface layer of the tea cake opens up.

Selecting the right teaware is also very important. Pu'er tea is typically brewed using clay or porcelain pots, which not only help maintain the temperature and taste of the tea but also enhance the aroma and flavor of the Pu'er tea. Additionally, a Gaiwan (covered bowl) is another commonly used teaware, especially suitable for those who prefer to drink from cups.

When brewing Pu'er tea, attention should be paid to the temperature of the teacup. Before brewing, heat the Teacups with hot water to ensure the tea remains at the right temperature. Additionally, you can perform a step called “awakening the tea,” where the tea leaves are placed in the cup, a small amount of water is poured over them, and then the water is discarded. This helps remove any dust or impurities.

The steps for brewing Pu'er tea are roughly as follows:

1. Place the tea leaves into the teapot;

2. Add an appropriate amount of hot water; the first infusion is usually steeped for about 5-8 seconds before being discarded;

3. For subsequent infusions, gradually increase the Steeping time, and you can slightly adjust the amount of tea between infusions;
