Shallow Observation

The selection of clay and the making of the Teapot body are all done by hand, thus the production is very meticulous.

Clay —— First and foremost, the clay must be good.

Color —— Purple clay mainly includes purple clay, red clay, duan clay, and green clay. Through manual blending, different variations can be produced, forming a richer variety of clays, which in turn can be fired into colorful purple clay Teapots.

Shape —— All lines seen on the body of the teapot, including contour lines and lines at the intersection of surfaces, should have elasticity, like tree branches or bamboo twigs, able to stand on their own, demonstrating vibrant vitality (the body of the teapot should have an expanding feel, a sense of air, and spatial tension).

Proportion —— The shape of the teapot must be harmonious and follow the principles of design.

Details —— The parts of the teapot that cannot be seen from the inside must also be well-made, with no detail overlooked (for example: the air hole is not just a simple opening, but an element within an artwork; it should look beautiful at first glance, not just serve for ventilation).

Reasonableness —— It must conform to the principles of teapot-making and natural laws, combining hardness and softness, squares and circles, straight and curved lines.

Deep Observation

The expression of the purple clay's aura is generally reflected in the techniques:

Gross and Fine —— This is particularly evident in the spout, handle, and knob. Good works exhibit subtle changes in thickness in these three components.

Polishing Needle —— This point is also very important, and older generations of artists paid great attention to it. The texture presented by good polishing needles, which appears as if it requires no maintenance, is also an important manifestation of the aura.

Curved Surface —— A Purple Clay Teapot is composed of multiple lines that form a three-dimensional object. (Taking pure hand-formed purple clay ware as a reference, it is not difficult to discover that virtually all lines forming a hand-shaped purple clay teapot are not true straight lines, rather, each one is an arc. These arcs are expressed through circular arcs, parabolic lines, and S-lines, which together form curved surfaces.)

Integration —— Many works have an issue where, when the components are separated, each part is fine, but once assembled, they do not come together, resulting in a very scattered appearance. For most teapot shapes, the knob, lid, neck, spout, handle, body, and foot can be imagined sequentially as head, shoulders, neck, hands, body, and feet, representing a lifelike artistic form.

Transition —— In addition to observing the structure, you can also look at the transition techniques where components join (the spout and handle are attached to the body later, and a simple attachment often lacks aura).

Details —— An example will illustrate this point more clearly: whether the connections between various parts are messy or handled naturally. As the saying goes, details determine success or failure.
