What Level Are You at in Drinking Pu-erh Tea?

First Stage: Elementary School Level

Elementary Level 1: Occasionally drinks tea, does not distinguish between raw and ripe, does not consider age, drinks whatever is available, does not mind not drinking.

Elementary Level 2: Drinks a small amount, can tell raw from ripe but does not distinguish age, drinks for thirst, does not care about quality, finds brewing too troublesome.

Elementary Level 3: Occasionally drinks, easily distinguishes raw from ripe, only drinks ripe tea, seeks health benefits, prefers tender leaves, and has high expectations for weight loss.

 


 

Second Stage: Ordinary Level

Elementary Level 4: Mainly drinks ripe tea, pays attention to vintage, pursues flavor, emphasizes brewing, can brew tea themselves, seeks weight loss and lipid reduction.

Elementary Level 5: Starts drinking raw tea, mixes raw and ripe, sensitive to bitterness, gradually increases tea intake, focuses on pure material, and finds no effect on sleep.

Elementary Level 6: Prefers raw tea, occasionally drinks ripe tea, can discern bitterness, pays attention to tree age, researches origin, and is interested in ancient tea trees.

 


 

Third Stage: Deity Level

Middle School Level 1: Frequently drinks raw tea, some ripe tea, recognizes flavor, understands tea mountains, studies tea history, blindly obsessed with ancient trees.

Middle School Level 2: Enjoys raw tea, rarely drinks ripe tea, seeks ancient and aged teas, questions what makes good tea, begins to feel lost amid tea industry chaos.

Middle School Level 3: Loves raw tea, appreciates aroma and aftertaste, starts discerning texture and energy, explores diverse tea mountains, feeling lost in a maze of complexity.

 


 

Fourth Stage: Supreme Deity Level

High School Level 1: Skilled in drinking raw tea, seeks specific teas, prioritizes personal needs, begins clarifying the chaos of tea mountains amid an opaque tea industry.

High School Level 2: Recognizes the different benefits of raw and ripe tea, appreciates the charm of single-origin teas, starts identifying industry hype.

High School Level 3: Understands the impact of origin, season, craftsmanship, storage conditions, and time, and carefully evaluates tea brands.

 


 

Fifth Stage: Transcendent Level

Undergraduate Level: Recognizes the pros and cons of raw and ripe tea, appreciates the uniqueness of single-origin teas, and understands the geographical diversity of tea.

Graduate Level: Drinks tea daily like a ritual, connects tea with life and Zen, cherishes tea, and sees the vast world within tea.

Doctoral Level: Understands the philosophy of Pu-erh, achieves enlightenment, sees tea beyond its physical form, and perceives life's reflections in both fine and poor teas.
