Common Sense|Will Drinking Tea While Taking Medicine Cause Problems?

Tea News · Jul 07, 2025

Tea can be taken with medicine? This is a difficult question to answer. Some believe tea can be consumed with medicine, while others disagree.

In fact, over 90% of medications can be taken with tea, especially vitamin-based drugs. However, there are three types of medications that should not be taken with tea:

The first type is metal-based medications, such as those containing iron or calcium. For example, children and elderly people taking calcium supplements or women with anemia taking iron supplements should avoid tea, as tea polyphenols can bind with iron and calcium, neutralizing both the medicine and tea's effects.

The second type is sedatives. Taking sleeping pills with tea is definitely not advisable. If tea is consumed with sedatives (such as phenobarbital or diazepam), the caffeine and theophylline in tea will counteract or weaken the calming effects of the medication.

The third type is enzyme-based drugs. Digestive enzymes taken for poor digestion will become ineffective if consumed with tea. While tea alone may aid digestion, combining it with enzyme-based drugs can hinder the digestive process.

Because there are many types of medications and their interactions are difficult to predict, and because tea contains tannins that can react with certain drugs to form precipitates, reducing the body's absorption of the medication, it is generally recommended to avoid taking medicine with tea to prevent unnecessary complications.
