The packaging paper of Pu'er Tea provides storage instructions. For general household storage, following these instructions as indicated on the package box should be sufficient. If storing a small amount of tea, you can use large envelopes made of kraft paper to keep the tea together. Avoid storing it alongside non-tea items to prevent flavors from mingling.
However, if you have a larger collection or higher requirements for storage, you can utilize various containers specifically designed for storing Pu'er tea. Commonly used containers include those made of purple clay or ceramics, and cardboard boxes are also an option.
The following are four common methods for storing Pu'er tea:
Direct storage, jar storage method, cost-effective cardboard box storage method, and fresh storage method.
① Direct Storage
Pu'er tea can be stored directly in multiple paper bags or bamboo shells without the need for an additional outer plastic bag, which would hinder air circulation. Refrigeration is not recommended for storing Pu'er tea.
② Jar Storage Method
Storing Pu'er tea in jars is a scientific approach, particularly suitable for collectors. Well-sealed jars effectively prevent the tea from becoming damp and avoid oxidation by limiting contact with air. They also have the added benefit of enhancing the flavor of the tea. Purple clay jars or Ceramic jars are recommended.
When using jars for storage, do not mix different teas to avoid flavor contamination, as Pu'er teas vary in both variety and aroma. Once placed in the jar, ensure it is sealed tightly to retain the tea's aroma.
③ Cost-effective Cardboard Box Storage Method
If you're not a collector but simply enjoy drinking Pu'er tea, you can use simple cardboard boxes for storage. This method is easy and convenient. However, make sure the box is not placed near walls or on the ground, as moisture can cause the tea to become damp. Instead, place the box on bookshelves or wooden racks.
④ Fresh Storage Method
If using jars seems too complicated, you can store Pu'er tea in airtight bags. High-quality bags provide similar benefits to jar storage. For long-term storage, using bags allows for easy inspection of the tea's condition and makes brewing more convenient.
