Is the Legendary 'Strong Tea to Sober Up' Actually Good?

Tea News · Jan 09, 2026

Using strong tea to sober up is equivalent to adding fuel to a fire. Alcohol entering the human body has a stimulating effect on the nervous system, causing the heart rate to increase, blood vessels to dilate, and blood flow to accelerate.

When a person is drunk, this stimulating effect intensifies and turns into an adverse irritation. The theophylline and caffeine contained in tea leaves also have stimulating effects, which, for the heart of an intoxicated person, is like pouring oil on a fire, further increasing the burden on the heart.

Drinking tea after alcohol, especially strong tea when heavily drunk, causes the theophylline and other substances in the tea to rapidly produce a strong diuretic effect through the kidneys. As a result, alcohol in the body enters the kidneys prematurely before being broken down into carbon dioxide and water, posing harm to human health.

Therefore, the notion of "using strong tea to sober up" is not only scientifically unfounded but also extremely harmful.
