Overnight Tea is Actually a Good Medicine

Tea News · Feb 24, 2026

Many people believe that overnight tea should not be consumed, with various claims, the most "alarming" being that drinking overnight tea can cause cancer. In fact, this claim has no scientific basis.

The reason overnight tea is not recommended for drinking is that over time, most of its vitamins are lost. However, unspoiled overnight tea has its own wonderful uses in healthcare.

1. Anti-cancer and Antioxidant

Tea turns reddish-brown after sitting for a long time because tea polyphenols oxidize into reddish-brown tea pigments. Studies show that both tea polyphenols and tea pigments have strong anti-cancer and antioxidant effects.

2. Stops Bleeding

Overnight tea is rich in tannic acid, which can stop capillary bleeding. Conditions like stomatitis, tongue sores, eczema, and gum bleeding can be treated by gargling with overnight tea. It can also be used to wash wounds, abscesses, and skin bleeding.

3. Brightens Eyes

The tea polyphenols in overnight tea have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. If your eyes are bloodshot, you can wash them several times a day with overnight tea.

4. Relieves Itching

Washing your hair or body with warm overnight tea can quickly relieve itching due to the fluoride content, and it can also prevent eczema.

5. Promotes Hair Growth

Washing hair with overnight tea can also promote hair growth and eliminate dandruff. If your eyebrows are sparse, you can brush them daily with a brush dipped in overnight tea. Over time, eyebrows will naturally become thicker and shinier.

6. Strengthens Teeth and Cleanses

After the fluoride in tea water calcifies with the enamel of teeth, it enhances resistance to acidic substances and reduces tooth decay. Fluoride can also eliminate dental plaque. It is best to gargle with tea water two to three minutes after meals.

7. Eliminates Bad Breath

Tea contains essential oil components with a fragrant aroma. Gargling with a few mouthfuls of overnight tea before or after brushing in the morning or after meals can freshen breath. Regular tea gargling can eliminate bad breath.

8. Soothes Sunburn

If skin is sunburned, gently wipe it with a towel dipped in overnight tea. Tannic acid has an astringent effect on the skin, and the flavonoid compounds in tea also have anti-radiation effects.

9. Removes Fishy Odors and Grease

Overnight tea has a particularly strong ability to remove fishy smells and grease. Washing hands after eating shrimp or crab feels refreshing.

10. Aids Digestion

Drinking a cup of cool overnight tea from the night before after waking up in the morning can aid digestion, refresh the mind, and reduce fat.

11. Treats Athlete's Foot

The rich substances in overnight tea can treat athlete's foot.

Note: When using overnight tea, it should not be sour or spoiled. In summer, with high temperatures, tea can easily sour and spoil. If it has been left for more than 24 hours, it is best not to drink it, as it may cause diarrhea.
