brewing Method for Ban Zhang Large Tree Tea
Today, we are brewing Ban Zhang tea—specifically the 2025 Bajiaoting Ban Zhang Large Tree. This tea is blended from large tree teas in the Ban Zhang tea region and exhibits very strong characteristics of Ban Zhang.
As usual, we have chosen a Gaiwan. The brewing steps remain the same: first, warm the cup and clean the utensils. Second, add the tea, using 8 grams as before.
When rinsing the Ban Zhang tea, pour the water slightly more coarsely. Rinse for 8 seconds before discarding the rinse water.
The aroma of the tea leaves when hot is quite prominent, with floral notes being dominant, and Orchid fragrance standing out. Smell the lingering scent on the cup; it is distinct with honey notes being prominent.
Pour water for the first infusion, trying not to stir the leaves too much. There are many fine hairs in this tea liquor.
For the first four infusions, control the brewing time at around 8 seconds. If you're worried about astringency, let the tea liquor flow out slowly.
As the tea liquor becomes lighter with successive infusions, extend the brewing time to around 10 to 15 seconds.
We are now on the 11th infusion.
This is nearing the end of the tea's potency. Let it steep for about 30 seconds. After the extended Steeping, the liquor color remains beautiful and hasn't faded much.
There is no special technique required for brewing this Ban Zhang Large Tree tea. Simply use your normal brewing method. Just be mindful not to stir the leaves too much during brewing, as doing so can release more bitterness and astringency.
The overall mouthfeel of this tea: upon entry, it is sweet and smooth, followed by bitterness, which then leads to a very pleasant overall sensation in the mouth.
The aroma is primarily honey-floral, with orchid fragrance taking the lead. The cup aroma is predominantly honey-like. The characteristics of Ban Zhang tea are very evident. If you have a choice and your budget is limited, this one is still a very good option.
