Black tea has a short shelf life

Pu-erh tea can be stored long-term and improves with age, but black tea is different. It has a limited shelf life, and prolonged storage causes the tea aroma to fade, affecting the taste of the brewed tea. Thus, black tea generally holds no collectible value.

How long is black tea's shelf life? It depends on the packaging. Typically, canned black tea lasts 2 years, sealed bags 1–2 years, and loose tea about 18 months. Proper storage may extend this slightly, but for the best flavor, consume it within the recommended period.

How to store tea?
Once opened, tea should be stored promptly. Common household methods include container or bag storage. Container storage is popular for its convenience, but note that tea absorbs odors easily. If the container has residual smells, place a small amount of tea inside first to neutralize them.

Bag storage is more economical but requires food-grade, high-density, and durable packaging.
Unlike aged teas, black tea is rarely collectible and shouldn’t be stored too long. For premium black tea, ensure proper storage and consume it within the shelf life.
