Some tea enthusiasts may own more than one purple clay teapot, but not all of them are used daily. Some teapots might be stored for 2-3 months before being used again, or a used teapot may be kept aside for future use. However, simply storing the teapot without any preparation can harm it. So, what should be considered when storing a used purple clay teapot?

1. A used purple clay teapot must be thoroughly dried, with no moisture left inside. To check if the teapot is dry, place a piece of tissue inside, close the lid, and check the next day to see if the tissue is damp.
2. Do not wrap the teapot directly or store it in a box, as the tea stains inside may develop mold.

3. Store the teapot in a well-ventilated area, avoiding prolonged exposure to sunlight. Do not place it in a humid or stuffy location. Ideally, keep it on a dedicated display shelf or storage rack.
4. For long-term storage, place a handful of dry tea leaves inside the teapot—preferably the same type of tea previously brewed in it. Periodically check if the tea leaves have absorbed moisture. If they become damp, remove them immediately and allow the teapot to dry completely again. This method helps prevent mold growth by absorbing any moisture that enters the teapot through the spout or lid.

Comparison between a well-maintained teapot and an unused one
I always emphasize that purple clay teapots require proper care. Even if you don’t use a teapot frequently, it should still be seasoned initially. A seasoned teapot will gradually develop a patina, though the process is slower compared to regular use. When comparing a new but seasoned teapot with an unseasoned one, the difference in appearance is noticeable.
