Can different teas be mixed together?

Tea News · Jun 20, 2025

1. Each type of tea has its own unique benefits, and different kinds of teas require varying amounts of leaves, water temperatures, steeping times, and number of infusions. Mixing different teas together can be complicated and may lead to adverse effects due to conflicting flavors and properties. Therefore, it is generally not advisable to mix teas.

2. Due to differences in tea varieties and processing methods, each tea has a distinct aroma and taste. Mixing different teas can disrupt their individual characteristics, diminishing the enjoyment of tea appreciation. Combining teas may also result in a cloudy brew with sediment, leading to an impure flavor and potential digestive issues or stomach discomfort.

3. Drinking multiple types of tea at once may cause physical discomfort, often due to excessive consumption, which can lower blood sugar levels and induce dizziness—a condition known as "tea drunkenness." When mixing teas, overconsumption becomes more likely, increasing the risk of tea drunkenness. If this occurs, consuming sweets or drinking plenty of water can help alleviate symptoms. To prevent tea drunkenness, it is recommended to eat snacks while drinking tea to maintain blood sugar levels.

4. Additionally, tea appreciation involves not only tasting and smelling but also observing the tea leaves and the color of the brew. Mixing teas would undermine this experience.
