Skillfully Using 6 Teas to Regulate Chronic Cough

Tea News · Sep 26, 2025

If there is a history of chronic pharyngitis or allergic cough, one is more prone to dry, spasmodic coughing, dryness in the mouth, throat, and nose, dry lips and tongue, dry and itchy throat, or the sensation of phlegm stuck in the throat—and the itchier it gets, the more one coughs. Those with a history of allergic rhinitis or cough variant asthma may also experience continuous sneezing in the morning, persistent spasmodic coughing at night, and sometimes a sound in the throat like a water bird calling.

After developing a cough, the cause should be identified. Such patients often show little response to antibiotics, antispasmodics, or antihistamines. However, Traditional Chinese Medicine methods such as dispelling wind and diffusing the lungs, resolving phlegm and benefiting the throat, clearing dryness and moistening the lungs often achieve significant results.

Once the cough is under control, herbal膏方 (paste) formulations for nourishing the lungs, dispelling wind and moistening the lungs, boosting qi, and preventing sensitivity (such as Shashen Liujun Tang, Yu Ping Feng San, Guizhi Renshen Tang, etc.) can be used for recuperation and prevention. Take 1-2 spoonfuls twice daily, and persist through one winter. Such pastes can enhance constitution, improve immune and defensive capabilities, and prevent recurrent cough episodes.

For chronic dry cough, try to eat less pungent foods and seasonings like Sichuan pepper, chili, Chinese chives, garlic, scallions, star anise, fennel, as well as hotpot and fried or grilled foods, to avoid generating dryness through pungency and heat, which induces coughing.

For medicated diets, you can choose from the following teas and soups based on symptoms:
