What to Do About Teeth Stains from Drinking Tea?

Tea News · Feb 07, 2026

Loving tea is a good thing. Drinking tea can help prevent aging and has health and wellness benefits. However, if you drink strong tea over a long period without paying attention to dental care, your teeth can easily turn yellow.

Long-term consumption of strong tea can lead to polyphenol oxides from the tea leaves adhering to the surface of the teeth. If you don't brush your teeth, this can gradually cause them to yellow, much like how a teapot or teacup develops a layer of "tea stain" if not cleaned regularly.

At the same time, if you drink tea that is too concentrated, excessive fluoride intake beyond the body's physiological needs can also lead to dental fluorosis, causing teeth to darken and become prone to cavities. So, while loving tea is good, it's also important to pay attention to your teeth.

Rinse Your Mouth Promptly After Drinking Tea

If you don't rinse your mouth in time after drinking tea, the pigments in the tea can also stick to your teeth and cause discoloration. Therefore, rinsing promptly after drinking tea is crucial. Of course, drinking some plain water after tea is also helpful.

Generally, getting a dental cleaning every six months or so can effectively clean your teeth. But besides such methods, folk remedies can also help you achieve whiter teeth~

1. Vinegar Trick to Remove Tartar

People who often drink tea may have their teeth stained with a yellowish tea residue that is hard to remove with toothpaste. However, brushing with vinegar can help whiten teeth. Take a mouthful of vinegar, swish it around for 2–3 minutes, then spit it out and brush your teeth vigorously. Finally, rinse with water. Repeating this several times can remove tea stains.

2. Dried Tangerine Peel Powder as Toothpaste for Cleaning

Grind dried tangerine peel into a fine powder and add a little to your toothpaste each time you brush. Not only will this help whiten your teeth and leave your mouth feeling fresh, but since tangerine peel also has strong antiseptic properties, long-term use can effectively strengthen teeth.

3. Cuttlefish Bone

Grind cuttlefish bone into a fine powder and use it to brush your teeth. This can turn yellow teeth white.

4. Baking Soda for Teeth Cleaning

Dip your toothbrush in a little baking soda (edible alkali) and brush as usual. Doing this once or twice a week for three minutes each time can keep your teeth bright and clean.
