Chrysanthemum and Forsythia Tea for Rhinitis

Tea News · Feb 14, 2026

Using 15 grams of chrysanthemum, 6 grams of Cang Er Zi (Xanthium fruit), and 6 grams of forsythia, decocted and taken as tea, can treat rhinitis.

This formula is suitable for sinusitis of the wind-heat or lung-heat type. This type of rhinitis is often seen in patients with symptoms such as fever and chills, headache and chest tightness, or cough with yellow phlegm, as well as a red tongue with a yellow coating. This is because these herbs primarily have heat-clearing properties, and Cang Er Zi additionally has the effect of clearing the nasal passages.

However, it is important to note that Cang Er Zi is one of the Chinese medicinal herbs with hepatotoxic potential. Improper use may cause various degrees of toxic reactions. Reasonable and scientific application is necessary to leverage the benefits of this herb while minimizing its toxic side effects to the greatest extent. Therefore, it is not recommended for readers to try this folk remedy on their own; it should be used under the guidance of a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner following a proper diagnosis and according to their prescription.
