Counting the Charms of Pu-erh Tea

Tea News · Mar 29, 2026

In recent years, a wave of Pu-erh fever has swept across the country. What exactly has given Pu-erh such a strong boost?

However, Pu-erh's widespread popularity stems more from its inherent charms. Let's now count the charms of Pu-erh.

Origin Characteristics

Tea Sage Residence Pu-erh tea grows in the Six Famous Tea Mountains of Xishuangbanna Prefecture, located within the primeval forests on both sides of the Lancang River.

It enjoys year-round humidity, misty clouds, fertile soil, no pollution, and exceptional quality.

It has long been praised as “mist locks thousands of tea trees, clouds part to reveal lush valleys, fragrance wafts for miles, rich flavor fills a single cup.”

Variety Characteristics

The tea plant variety used to make Pu-erh is the Yunnan large-leaf variety, commonly called the Pu-erh tea plant.

The buds and leaves grow large and tender, containing particularly rich substances, resulting in tea with high aroma and strong flavor.

Production Process

The fresh leaves for making Pu-erh tea undergo fixation, rolling, and sun-drying to become sun-dried green tea.

Sun-dried green tea is steamed and compressed to make various compressed teas, which age over time to become naturally aged Pu-erh.

Sun-dried green tea undergoes pile-fermentation to produce ripe Pu-erh loose tea and various compressed Pu-erh teas.

Diverse Shapes

Besides various grades of loose tea, Pu-erh also comes in shapes like tuo tea, tight tea, cake tea, square tea, plaque tea, and column tea.

Improves with Age

Unlike other tea types that favor fresh tea, Pu-erh has the characteristic of improving with age.

Sun-dried green tea naturally ages or undergoes pile-fermentation to become ripe Pu-erh, undergoing a slow mellowing and post-fermentation process, gradually developing its unique aged aroma style.

The aged aroma increases with longer mellowing time. The longer Pu-erh is stored, the stronger its aged aroma style and the higher its quality.

Aged Pu-erh can develop captivating aromas of dates, lotus, ginseng, and camphor.

Versatile Drinking Methods

It can be brewed, boiled, mixed raw and ripe, or used to make butter tea, salt tea, and other drinking methods.

Collection and Appreciation

Pu-erh tea has collection and appreciation value. It can be collected by shape, year, origin, or production batch.

One can collect raw Pu-erh or ripe Pu-erh. Artisanal Pu-erh also has appreciation value.

People call Pu-erh tea a “drinkable antique.”

Addictive with Long-term Drinking

Those who enjoy drinking Pu-erh tea often feel they didn't know until they tried it, and once they do, they can't leave it.

Once they start drinking Pu-erh, they are captivated by its charm; switching to other teas never feels satisfying enough.

Not drinking Pu-erh for a day feels somehow wrong.

This is the exclusivity of Pu-erh tea and the reason it creates so many Pu-erh “enthusiasts.”

Suitable for All Ages

Ripe Pu-erh has a mild nature, making it a beverage suitable for men, women, young and old, drinkable in all four seasons.

Beneficial for Health

Ripe Pu-erh has effects such as warming the stomach, aiding digestion, lowering blood lipids and cholesterol, preventing vascular hardening, and anti-cancer properties.
