How to Give New Life to Used Tea Leaves?

Tea News · Mar 29, 2026

People often think that overnight tea is useless and usually pour it out. However, it is not without its uses; sometimes you might really need it!

I. Health & Wellness

Stop Bleeding: For conditions like stomatitis, tongue sores, eczema, or gum bleeding, gargling with overnight tea can help. It can also be used to wash wounds with pus or skin bleeding.

Brighten Eyes: The tea polyphenols in overnight tea have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. If your eyes are bloodshot, you can wash them with overnight tea several times a day.

Relieve Itching: Washing your hair or body with warm overnight tea can quickly relieve itching due to the fluoride content and also help prevent eczema.

Promote Hair Growth: Washing hair with overnight tea can promote hair growth and eliminate dandruff. If your eyebrows are sparse, you can brush them daily with a brush dipped in overnight tea. Over time, eyebrows will naturally become thicker and shinier.

Strengthen & Clean Teeth: After fluoride in tea water combines with tooth enamel, it enhances resistance to acidic substances and reduces cavities. Fluoride also eliminates dental plaque. It's best to rinse with tea water 2-3 minutes after meals.

Eliminate Bad Breath: Tea contains aromatic essential oils. Gargling with a few mouthfuls of overnight tea before or after brushing in the morning or after meals can freshen breath. Regular tea rinses can eliminate bad breath.

Remove Fishy Odors & Grease: Overnight tea is particularly effective at removing fishy smells and grease. Washing hands after eating shrimp or crab feels refreshing.

Treat Athlete's Foot: People with athlete's foot can boil tea leaves into a strong decoction to wash their feet nightly. Over time, it can cure the condition. Green tea is best.

Note: When using overnight tea, ensure it has not soured (spoiled). In summer, high temperatures can cause tea to sour quickly. If left for more than 24 hours, it's best not to drink it, as it may cause diarrhea.

II. Beauty Care

1. Lengthen Eyelashes

Let leftover tea cool. Before bed or the next morning, use a cotton swab dipped in the tea to moisten eyelashes. This can help them grow longer. Give it a try! It's an efficient and economical "eyelash serum."

2. Reduce Dark Circles

Apply used tea bags as a warm compress on the eyes to reduce dark circles!

3. Soothe Sunburn

If skin is sunburned, gently wipe it with a towel dipped in overnight tea. The flavonoids in tea have anti-radiation effects.

III. Household Uses

◆ Painted doors, windows, furniture, or glass panes covered in dust can be wiped with cold tea dregs to make them especially bright and clean.

◆ New wooden furniture often has a pungent paint smell. Wiping it several times with tea water can eliminate the odor better than cleaning agents.

◆ Pour out the water from overnight tea, let it drain slightly, then place a cloth on a radiator. Spread the tea leaves evenly on the cloth. Soon, the tea's fragrance will disperse throughout the room with the rising steam. It's both eco-friendly and economical!

IV. Laundry

◆ New clothes or fabrics often have a strong, unpleasant smell from dyes. Burn a handful of tea leaves; the smoke can help remove the odor.

◆ If brightly colored clothes have faded, rinsing them with tea can restore their original color.

◆ Using tea water to wash woolen sweaters can also remove dirt and keep colors bright.

◆ Grease stains on dark clothes can be removed by rubbing with used tea leaves.

◆ Silk clothing is very sensitive to chemical detergents, but tea water can maintain silk's original luster, making it look new again. It has the same effect on nylon fabrics.

V. Dehumidifying & Preventing Mold

In southern China, during the hot, humid, and rainy months of June and July, wooden furniture, clothes, shoes, and hats can develop mildew spots. Here, overnight tea can come to the rescue again.

Collect leftover overnight tea daily, dry it in the sun, then pack it in cloth or kraft paper bags and seal them. Before the rainy season arrives, place these bags in areas prone to mold, such as shoe cabinets, bed bases, and other wooden furniture; inside closets storing clothes, blankets, or books; and in bedroom corners or inside pillows.

During occasional sunny days in the rainy season, expose the tea bags to the sun. Once the moisture-absorbing tea bags are dry again, put them back in their places. Repeating this process a few times will help protect you from dampness and mold throughout the season, allowing you to stay comfortable and dry.
