Tea News · Apr 12, 2026

Dry eye syndrome is a common condition in people over 50. Symptoms often include eye dryness and discomfort, burning sensation, grittiness, stabbing pain, itching, light sensitivity, eye redness, blurred vision, and eye fatigue. Overuse of eyes, dry and high-temperature environments, dusty conditions, and other eye irritants can worsen dry eye syndrome. So, how can we prevent and treat it? Let's find out together below!

The most commonly used treatment for dry eye syndrome is artificial tear replacement therapy, but this method addresses the symptoms, not the root cause. Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that the liver stores blood and opens into the eyes. Insufficient yin blood leads to malnourishment of the eyes, thus causing this condition. Treating by nourishing yin, enriching blood, and soothing the liver can achieve good results. Below are two recommended herbal teas for nourishing the liver and improving eyesight.

1. Chrysanthemum Tea Take 3 grams of chrysanthemum flowers and brew with boiling water as a tea. Chrysanthemum has the effects of lightening the body, boosting qi, dispelling wind, clearing heat, detoxifying, calming the liver, and brightening the eyes, making it an excellent herb for preventing and treating various eye disorders. Chrysanthemum tea can clear the mind and brighten the eyes. It is especially suitable for those with strong liver fire and eye strain, experiencing symptoms like dry eyes, burning sensation, itching, and redness.

2. Schisandra Honey Tea Take 4 grams of northern schisandra berries, 6 grams of butterfly bush flowers (Mi Meng Hua), 1 gram of green tea powder, and an appropriate amount of honey. Boil the schisandra berries and butterfly bush flowers in a pot with a suitable amount of water for 3 minutes. Then, mix in the green tea powder and honey. This tea can be consumed freely. It has the effects of clearing heat, nourishing the liver, improving eyesight, and removing visual obstructions. It is suitable for patients with dry eye syndrome, presbyopia, or cataracts due to yin deficiency and internal heat.
