Tea Lovers, You Must Remember the Foods You Cannot Eat Together

Tea News · Apr 30, 2026

Do you know what foods you cannot eat together with tea? Let's take a look with the editor!

1. Tea + Meat = Prone to Constipation

The rich protein in meat can chemically react with the tannic acid in tea, producing new substances that affect intestinal motility, thereby prolonging the time feces remain in the intestines.

After eating pork, dog meat, lamb, or donkey meat, you should wait 2–3 hours before drinking tea. Otherwise, it may not only cause constipation but also increase the possibility of toxic and carcinogenic substances being absorbed by the body, endangering health.

2. Tea + Chicken Liver = Reduces Iron Absorption

Chicken liver is rich in iron, while tea contains tannic acid. Eating chicken liver while drinking tea reduces the body's absorption of iron.

3. Tea + Eggs = Affects Protein Absorption

Eggs are high-protein foods. Tea contains more tannic acid, which reacts with the protein in food to form a hard-to-digest coagulate, affecting the body's absorption of protein.

Some experts point out that the combination of tea and eggs can irritate the stomach. Eating too many tea eggs may cause anemia symptoms, lead to calcium deficiency and osteoporosis, and is not beneficial to health.

4. Tea + Medicine = Affects Drug Absorption

Tea should not be taken with medication, as it affects drug absorption. The tannic acid in tea can chemically react with certain drugs (such as ferrous sulfate tablets, ferric ammonium citrate, berberine, etc.) to form precipitates, which counteract or weaken the body's absorption of the drugs.

In fact, not all drugs react with tea, but because there are many types of drugs and it is difficult to master, doctors often advise not to take medication with tea to avoid unnecessary accidents.

5. Tea + Seaweed = Stomach Discomfort

Both seaweed and tea are cold-natured foods. Consuming seaweed while drinking tea may cause stomach coldness.

6. Tea + Crab = Indigestion

Do not drink tea within 1 hour before or after eating crab. Tea can dilute stomach acid, and certain components in crab may solidify, hindering digestion and absorption, possibly causing abdominal pain and diarrhea.

7. Tea + White Sugar = Increases Heart Burden

Tea has a bitter and cold nature. People drink tea to stimulate the digestive glands with its bitterness, promoting the secretion of digestive juices to enhance digestion.

Also, the cold nature of tea is used to achieve heat-clearing and detoxifying effects. Adding sugar to tea inhibits this function.

8. Tea + Alcohol = Stimulates the Heart, Harms Kidneys

Drinking tea after alcohol: Theophylline in tea has a diuretic effect, but at this time, the acetaldehyde converted from alcohol in the body has not yet been fully broken down. Due to the diuretic effect of theophylline, acetaldehyde enters the kidneys, which is highly irritating to the kidneys and extremely harmful.

As a result, symptoms such as kidney cold, impotence, frequent and turbid urination, and testicular pain may occur. In addition, strong tea has a heart-stimulating effect, and drinking tea after alcohol puts the heart under double stress, further increasing the heart burden.

9. Tea + Ginseng = Wasted Effort

American ginseng has the effects of tonifying qi, nourishing yin, clearing heat, and promoting fluid production. Because its nature is mild, it does not conflict with cold-natured tea. However, if replaced with Chinese ginseng slices, it is different. Chinese ginseng is hot in nature, and when combined with cold-natured tea, their effects cancel each other out, making consumption useless.

10. Hot Tea + Cold Drinks = Dental Problems, Harmful to the Stomach and Intestines

Alternating between cold and hot not only stimulates the teeth, making them prone to dental diseases, but also harms the stomach and intestines. Cold drinks and hot tea should be consumed at least 30 minutes apart.
