Can Diabetics Drink Pu'er Tea?

Tea News · May 11, 2026

Can diabetics drink Pu'er tea? Tea contains only about 4%-5% water-soluble sugars, making it a low-sugar, low-calorie beverage. Moreover, tea polyphenols in tea can significantly inhibit the rise of cholesterol and triglycerides (both major blood lipid components) and promote the excretion of lipid compounds from the body. Therefore, drinking Pu'er tea is beneficial for diabetes.

Can diabetics drink Pu'er tea? Research has found that Pu'er tea can significantly inhibit the activity of enzymes related to diabetes. Pu'er ripe tea, made from large-leaf Yunnan tea varieties and processed using modern biological fermentation and extraction technologies to produce solid instant Pu'er tea powder, can inhibit diabetes-related enzymes by over 90%. Experimental results with diabetic animal models show that as Pu'er tea concentration increases, its blood sugar-lowering effect becomes more significant, while blood sugar levels in normal mice remain unchanged. Compared with the control group that did not drink Pu'er tea, the experimental group that drank Pu'er tea for 42 consecutive days saw a 42% decrease in blood sugar, while the group taking the oral diabetes drug rosiglitazone via gavage saw a 36% decrease. All diabetic model mice that drank Pu'er (ripe) tea for 11 consecutive months survived without sores or infections, while only 2 of the mice drinking ordinary water for 11 months survived, with a mortality rate of 80%. In animal experiments, it was also found that although blood sugar levels significantly decreased in the group taking oral diabetes drugs, 30% of the mice developed complications specific to diabetes.

Animal experiments observed that the group of diabetic mice drinking Pu'er (ripe) tea water continuously for two months lost 28.3% of their body weight, while the group taking oral diabetes drugs gained weight, indicating that Pu'er tea has a significant weight-loss effect. Animal experimental research results show that the method of consuming Pu'er tea greatly affects blood sugar reduction. When drinking a fixed amount of Pu'er tea, consuming it in multiple separate doses yields better results than drinking it all at once.

In an experience involving 120 diabetic patients drinking Pu'er tea, among those severely resistant to insulin injections and oral diabetes drugs, without changing their medication or dietary habits, 70% of the patients who drank a fixed amount of Pu'er tea saw their blood sugar drop below 7, with an average decrease of 35%. Among them, 40% of Type 2 diabetic patients drinking Pu'er tea (without stopping medication) had their blood sugar return to normal levels, while blood sugar levels of healthy participants in the experience remained unchanged.

Experts evaluate that scientifically drinking Pu'er tea can help prevent or assist in treating Type 2 diabetes and reduce complications caused by Type 2 diabetes. Currently, related discoveries and inventions from research on Pu'er tea's blood sugar-lowering effects have resulted in five national invention patent applications. So, can diabetics drink Pu'er tea? The answer is yes.
