The Relationship Between Tea Drinking and Age

Tea News · May 17, 2026

Tea drinking is beneficial to health, which has become a common consensus. However, most people do not like to give tea to adolescents, especially children, believing that tea is stimulating and will harm children's spleen and stomach; some even think it will cause anemia in children, thus affecting their health.

In fact, this concern is unnecessary. As long as tea is consumed in moderation, it is equally beneficial to health. For example, adolescents tend to be greedy in eating, and moderate tea drinking can help eliminate food stagnation and promote digestion; another example is that adolescents often have a "hot" constitution and suffer from constipation, while tea is "bitter and cold" and has the effect of "clearing the head, eliminating food stagnation in the middle, and easing bowel movements below."

Furthermore, adolescents are in a stage of growth and development, and the many nutrients in tea just supplement their needs. In addition, the fluoride content in old tea can be as high as 80%. Drinking some light tea or rinsing the mouth with tea can protect teeth and prevent dental caries.

In contrast, elderly people like to drink tea, often forming a daily habit from which they gain pleasure and benefit to their physical and mental health.

However, elderly people are physically weaker, have slower metabolism, and may suffer from some diseases. Even if they are disease-free, physiological changes such as bone hyperplasia and osteoporosis may occur. If they drink a large amount of tea, especially the fluoride in coarse old tea, it can affect bone metabolism and worsen osteoporosis.

For elderly people with tachycardia or heart disease, they should not drink too much tea, especially strong tea, otherwise the caffeine stimulation will increase the burden on the heart. In addition, many elderly men suffer from prostatitis, leading to frequent urination. Elderly women also tend to urinate more frequently. Therefore, they should not drink too much tea in the evening.

Considering the nature and composition of tea, as well as the actual situation of the elderly, it is advisable for the elderly to drink fine and tender teas.
